i see thumbnails for a handful of my CBZ files, but the rest of my CBZ and CBR files show nothing. i can't figure out what makes it work sometimes and not other times. very irritating!

If you add the CBZ extension to the list of Zip extensions then Opus will at least show you thumbnails for (up to) four images within the zips like it does for standard archives.

As for why CDisplayEx works with some files and not others, there are surely better places to ask about that.

I'm pretty sure if I ask on the CDisplayEx help forum why Directory Opus' thumbnail handler isn't generating thumbnails using CDisplayEx via the shell image extraction option, I'll get another snide reply pointing me right back here.

for what its worth i got it sorted. first i unregistered CDispShell.dll. then i manually cleaned my registry of all mentions of CBR and CBZ. next i re-registered CDispShell.dll and restarted Opus

now all thumbnails are displaying flawlessly :D

Opus has nothing to do with the thumbnail generation in this case. It just asks the shell for them and the shell, presumably, asks CDisplayEx.

Or are you saying the thumbnails appear in Explorer but not in Opus?

What's "Explorer"?

No but seriously, I didn't think to check. I'll grab CDisplayEx and try again.

I found that new version CBX Shell 4.0.1.6 is available

Works perfectly in Explorer and no CDisplayEx thumbnail problems.

I'm confused about interest in comics readers for Opus users... Sure, some of the odd cbr files seem to be compressed using some rar compression format that the Opus rar plugin doesn't understand... and while it's a pain to have to extract those using PowerArchiver, then re-zip them, I don't generally find that their original compression was any better than straight up zip. So I just don't understand the need for a "reader" application... double-click in Opus, double-click the first jpg, hit spacebar for each next page --- Avengers Assemble?

Cliff - thanks for the post, works great. i use Magna Meeya and used to install CDisplayEX just for thumbnails, but the thumbs only work if .cbr and .cbz were associated with CDisplayEX, so i had to change the double-click action in Opus to open them in Magna Meeya anyway.

now, all works nice and easy :)

steje - dedicated readers just have better features than the Opus viewer. custom hotkeys (still not sure why Opus viewer doesn't offer this), options to display facing pages, apply smoothing filters, view thumbs, jump to pages, and more.

in fact, i rarely use the Opus viewer for anything...
