7Zip early alpha (Contributors wanted)

Postby Nosh » 01 May 2007, 08:53

Since so many want a 7Zip plugin, but I have not many time, I want to release the source of an early alpha. Perhaps somebody wants to contribut to the project. In the moment you can only look inside an archiv. No creating, adding or extracting. This is an alpha, so expect crashes and data corruption, don't use it on a production machine and backup data you don't want to lose. 7Zip 4.45 must be installed, you can get it here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z445.msi?modtime=1176810969&big_mirror=0

Regards, Norbert

Attached is the first version with extracting. But there are random crashes in the COM interface to 7zip. I'm no expert in COM. The example 7zip-client uses 'new' for the COM classes but never 'deletes', perhaps there is the reason.

Thanks a lot, this is awesome.

Unfortunately, I am on vista x64 and have the 64bit version of 7zip installed.

So when I try to use this plugin DOpus crashes :(

Btw, the 64bit 7zip 4.47 is 30% faster than winrar 3.70 on vista x64 (it even decompresses rar archives faster than winrar). And compresses 90% of the files better than winrar.

7zip support is definitely needed.

How do the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of 7zip compare? Is there a big advantage from the 64-bit version?

Can both be installed at the same time?

The 64bit version is 10%-20% faster than the 32bit version.

Hehe, thx for the tip ;) I have now installed both versions (the x64 version must be installed last so that all the windows start menu and explorer links use it) and the vfs plugin now works perfectly :D

(But still looking forward to a 64bit DOpus build, so that we can get faster archives compression/extraction and a working windows explorer replacement for vista x64.)

I can confirm the random crashes. After browsing 7z archives for some time it will crash.

Can you provide more specific instructions regarding the installation of the zip file? To which location should it be extracted?

Also, when you go to Settings/Preferences/Plugins/VFS and highlight the 7-Zip box, should there be any configure options. Mine is grayed out.

If it's greyed out then they are no config options available. As the author states, this is an alpha release so don't expect it to be feature complete, and don't expect it to be bug free.

I don't need features. I am trying to get it to function and right now all it does lock up the program. That's why I am trying to find out where to extract the 7zvfs2.zip file to, and if there are any installation instructions.

The 7zvfs.dll goes here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\VFSPlugins

(remove (x86) if you are on a 32bit OS).

That's where I put it and it doesn't work. I'm running Windows XP sp2 on a 32 bit laptop.

Well, it should work.

But anyway, it's still buggy. Sometime it crashes after I enter the 2nd archive, sometimes after 10... I don't think I was ever able to enter more than 15 archives in row.

As it is now it's a nice preview to see dopus handle 7zip archives like zip/rar, but it is not stable enough to use in a productive environment.

Can you post a screenshot of what the DO lister looks like when you use the 7z plug-in?

It'll look much the same as when you open a zip file.

The 7zip plugin isn't in a usable state at the moment. This thread is a request for other programmers to help with the project, not really an invitation for people to try out the plugin. It's known to not yet work properly so it won't be very useful to most people.

When there's a working plugin it will be posted in the Plugins forum, rather than the Developers forum.
