12.2.6 (beta) Usability and cosmetic issues

You need to view the image in original size to see the borders correctly, thank you. Issues below.

*** The file display title bar (or what that is called) is really crammed

(Window 1. Yellow box) Area is creally crammed because there are no padding what so ever. This makes it is hard to use the buttons. The regular toolbars are ok.

Suggestion: The area should inherit the padding from toolbar settings at least when it is toolbar mode.

*** The view title bar (or what that is called) has outline missing in the location area.

I think this happens also because the padding is missing as in former issue.

Suggestion: The area should inherit the padding from toolbar settings at least when it is toolbar mode.

*** The statusbar outlines get messy after switching to dual view.

Window 2. The upper view has wrong outlines, but the lower one is ok.
Window 3. The statusbar outlines are ok, but the gap between then should match the width of divider
Window 4. When dual mode is turned off the statusbar has now wrong outlines, compare to Window 1.

Mig

ps. The explorer has become so crappy. DO seems to be really useful like back in the Amiga days :sunglasses:

These days, the whole OS and almost all software will look ugly if you turn off visual styles and go back to the Windows 95 look. The OS and most software is designed with visual styles in mind now (or it's software that has a completely custom look, which is a separate thing).

Windows 10 no longer exposes an option to disable visual styles, so it's also a legacy thing at this point. (I think it's still possible in Windows 10 when using Remote Desktop and configuring it for very slow connections; it may also be possible on the local desktop via some more-hidden options, but it's not something people are meant or expected to use in general with recent versions of Windows.)

We aim to ensure things work when visual styles are disabled, but we no longer spend time making the aesthetics look perfect. It seems like a lost cause for a mode where the entire OS looks terrible, even if we make our part look great, and where the few people who still use that mode are presumably not usually concerned with aesthetics (else the way the OS itself looks would put them off using the mode).

Since it means two codepaths for all of the painting code in the program, and requires installing the test code on another machine (as it can't be checked on our main development machines), it's a big time drain to maintain & test the old-style painting code. We still have to maintain & test it, and we do, but we no longer spend time on the aesthetics of it as it doesn't make sense to do so anymore.

Well, productivity, usability and personal preferences are so different between users that there is no point to assume, arque about or force things.

That aside, ALL of these issues are also present with visual styles enabled. The styles will make things more blurry for some people to notice, but they are there. If it would help I can mockup more detailed image of this.

What about the button padding issue that was not commented ?
