Almost ready to abandon Windows Explorer, except

...for two features:

  1. Can I have a Search Field, that hooks into Windows Search, just like the one on the top right of Windows Explorer?

  2. Can I have a Details Pane with the same functionality as the one in Windows Explorer?[/list]

Opus doesn't currently integrate with Windows Search, only its own search code (and Google Desktop Search if you have that installed.

Integration with Windows Search is on the to-do list, FWIW. (I'm not sure where on it, but it's on it.)

There's no details pane at the moment. Closest thing is the user-configurable tooltips which can display any file information that can be shown as a column in a Details or Power file display. (Tooltips can be edited via Settings -> File Types. The most interesting default/example tooltips are the ones for the Images and Movies content type groups.)

Great! Windows Search in Vista is quite powerful, and, of course, it's orderes of magnitudes faster than external search methods that do not rely on Vista's indexing catalog. That's a concern for somebody who has more than a hundred thousand indexed items, like me...

Yes, I know. But the neat thing about Explorers detail panel is that it allows me to quickly edit some basic file properties (like tags of pictures, author, title, etc. of Word documents, etc.). Very useful, and shouldn't be too hard to implement as an enhancement to your current status bar. Plus, it gives me immediate previes for a number of file types, including pictures, and PDF documents.

Speaking of which, OPUS does not seem to use the previews that are generated by Adobe Acrobat. Those are useful, too. The viewer pane can give me that as well, but it is very slow compared to the former.

Do you mean PDF thumbnails? They should appear so long as Shell Image Extraction is turned on in Preferences - Lister Display Modes - Thumbnails, and so long as the PDF files have preview images embedded in them.

(So long as Shell Image Extraction is turned on, you should see thumbnails for everything in Opus which you see in Explorer, plus the extra formats that Opus itself understands.)

Ahah, yes, that does the trick. Thanks again!
