When attempting to run an application file (especially any *.exe file) I get a popup menu asking what program I want to use to open the program instead of running the program. Microsoft's file manager and a few other file managers that I have tried work fine. This happens with both versions 11 and 12 even after completely deleting Dir Opus and reinstalling. I had no problems for years and then this started. I can't be sure but it might have started about the time Windows updated to its big anniversary upgrade. It is strange that it only affects Dir Opus and no other program. Any ideas? Thanks.
In Opus 12, please go to Settings > File Types and then in the window which opens use File > Diagnostic.
Put exe as the extension, click OK and then please attach the file it outputs, or email it to leo@gpsoft.com.au if you prefer. (It will include parts of your registry and Opus config relating to file types.)
Thanks for sending the diagnostic file!
Please load RegEdit.exe and then go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes.exe
You should then see this structure if you expand the branches below .exe:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes.exe
[ul][li]OpenWithList
[ul][li]Thumbs10.exe[/li]
[li]Thumbs9.exe[/li][/ul][/li][/ul]
There should not be anything else below .exe. If you see anything else, you may be in the wrong place, and please stop and ask back here before doing anything else, to avoid any problems. (If the .exe filetype is broken it can be a real pain to fix!)
However, if you see just those items and nothing else below .exe, right-click the .exe branch itself and delete it.
Everything should then start working again.
(Note that there is also another .exe branch in another part of the registry with all the main details. That should be left as-is. This extra branch under HKEY_CURRENT_USER is not normally there, and the OpenWithList item inside it is what's causing the problem.)
That fixed the problem. Thanks for the quick response.
