Automatically sort new files

I can't find this option in Directory Opus 10.
File Operations - Options - Automatically sort new and modified files
is this option was missing?
I wanna add files to the end of the list again...

That option has been removed, sorry. Files are always sorted now.

That's a shame. It was one of the reasons I bought DOpus. Since Vista Microsoft made the folders auto-sort without an option to turn that off, why choose to go the same way?

There's a new option to automatically scroll to and select new files (e.g. ones you just pasted into the directory) which might take care of some of the situations where you'd want the old option.

(I'm not sure exactly why it was removed as I wasn't involved. I'm sure there's a reason.)

Is there any chance we're going to get this option back?
Because the highlighted new files only works until you select one after which the new files are no longer highlighted and you have to search through all the files to find them again...

Send a support request and see what they say: gpsoft.com.au/Support.html

I've logged a support request for this.

When Vista first came out and Windows Explorer introduced the "auto sort" behaviour it was the main reason I then went out and purchased Opus 9 and then discovered all the other useful features of Opus.

Unfortunately I just went and upgraded my dual licences from v9 to v10 and afterwards realised this option is no longer there. I'm quite disappointed indeed to say the least! Opus is such a great program that I rely on heavily. Opus 10 is really going to mess things up for me now without the ability to switch off this option. The ability to switch off auto-sort was one of the many distinguishing features that separated Opus from Windows Explorer.

Very sad

Out of interest, which situations do you find the option useful in?

Most of ones I can think of, sorting by Created or Modified time would do the job, but I'm probably not thinking of all of them.

(The "new files not sorted properly" aspect of older versions of Explorer used to drive me crazy and was one of the reasons I started using Opus, so it goes both ways. Perhaps the option could be brought back for non-grouped modes if people really want it, although I'm not familiar with the complexity of doing that or if there were other reasons for it being removed.)

I second that.

I didn't realise this feature was removed. I too heavily rely on having the newly added items at the end of the lister (and unfortunately having them auto-selected is not a good-enough alternative). Can I add my name to the support request you've created, or should I open a new one?

Without trying to hijack the thread from the original poster:

I was just renaming some audio files and I needed them left in the order they were first visually displayed in before I started renaming. After each one was renamed, they jumped around and I lost the original order they were in. So basically I wanted to finish renaming them before the sort occurred (ie F5).

Another example is dragging and dropping files into a folder. I want them displayed at the end of the list until I manually decide to refresh the folder and then they are sorted. I know Opus keeps these files highlighted - but that isn't good enough. For me personally it is counter productive to have these added files sorted until I decide I want them to be.

I'd say for me personally 99% of the time, automatically sorting of files is a loss of productivity for me. I hit F5 when I want the folder sorted. You see it comes down to this - I want control over when things are sorted. Opus is all about getting back control and I don't want the program telling me when it is time to sort - I want that control.

I really hate to sound like a complainer here but this is such a crucial function for me.

By default I sort the lister by filename, just as Windows does. The "don't auto-sort" feature comes handy in many situations, e.g. when I download bunch of files from the net to a "bag" (say, the downloads library that has many files), once I finished downloading, I switch to the already-open downloads folder and quickly handle the new files.

Look, I could obviously accomplish the same by sorting the Downloads folder by modified-date, but the thing is that I'm used to work in the old-fashion way and I rely on it on many operations I do on many different folders. I guess it's just a preference, and you sure can teach an old dog new tricks, but it's gonna take some effort...

That is exactly how I use it. Also if you extract an archive in a folder that already has files in it, the extracted files don't get todays date, so sorting on modified-date won't help there...

I also send in a support request and got a message back saying the option had to be removed in order to get grouping in... so it doesn't look like we'll be getting it back any time soon. :frowning:

Bugger! So we'll have to think of some kind of a workaround.

Hey, how about using collections to auto-collect the last items in the current folder? Would that solve it?

I'm thinking of a special collection that auto-collects all the files modified in an opened lister. It will auto-clean itself once files are modified in a different opened lister. The last thing is that this special collection would have to support the "don't auto-sort" option, even if it means it won't support many of the other features, such as grouping.

If you reckon that's a feasible solution from us, the end users, then we can suggest that as a feature request. Obviously, I know nothing of the complexity in implementing this, but it's a shot worth taking.

I also need this option back. Along with couple of others they apparently removed.

I now think I've bought the upgrade license too soon. But who would've thought?

What other features have been removed?

Look, to be perfectly honest, even with the "don't auto-sort" feature missing, a feature I heavily use, I still think DOpus is the best file manager out there. I do like the new features that makes it more in alignment with how Win7 works, so in my case, I'm still happy I upgraded the licenses. That said, I would very much like to see a workaround from GPSoftware to the always auto-sort behaviour.

Look at other posts.

This is absolutely true and it has never stopped, looking back from good old Amiga days all up to day. And I believe there are many current DOpus users who feel the same way about it and they remember their Amigas, too. What I wanted to say was, that I upgraded without checking it out first, as I've believed that DOpus authors haven't ruined what's already achieved. That was the reason to my disappointment. And btw, the upgrade didn't come cheap despite the discount and all new features. But, I love it and I'll stick supporting Greg, Jonathan and the rest of the crew.

Example of why this option must be re-added:

  1. Folder contains 1000 files
  2. Copy 10 Zip files into the folder (at the bottom of the list please)
  3. Unzip these 10 files in DO-10 which extracts 30-50 files that are now distributed among the other 1000 files and impossible to track.
  4. If this is permanent then i am forced to revert to DO-9, BOO HOO

(The engineer that designed the motor compartment of an automobile obviously has never had to repair one)

All kidding aside, PLEASE 'O' PLEASE give us the option again.

It's coming back, don't worry.

Exactly why I would never do that in the first place. But the option is coming back, for everyone who does want to work that way.

We assumed nobody used this option but clearly that's not the case, as demonstrated by this thread. People rarely mention the features they like & use or the things we've done right; we only find out lots of people liked something when we change it and they complain. That's not specific to Opus or this thread; it's just the nature of software development and internet tech-support forums.

So, thanks for the feedback, and check out the next update when it's available. The option will be Settings -> Preferences -> Miscellaneous -> Advanced: no_sort_new_files (I think it's mainly in there because it avoids the need to translate any new strings, which would delay the update considerably).
