I've done a search for information but cannot find anything.
What I want to do is set the column sizes to automatically adjust themselves to the correct width in the lister window. I'm sure this is possible but I cannot find it in 'preferences'.
Could someone help please?

You can create a button to it with this command:
Set AUTOSIZECOLUMNS
Or you can do it with either folder formats or folder styles.
Preferences/folders/folder formats
Preferences/layout/lister styles
In either of the latter two, look for "Auto-size columns in Details and Power modes". That option is located on the Display tab of the folder format or style you are editing. In styles you have to look a little harder as that setting is part of the format/edit section in the left/right file display sections near the bottom of the dialog.

Thanks very much - boy it's so hard to find the setting!
Maybe someone at DOpus could find a way to make the setting more easily accessible?
also you can set it from right mouse button context menu: view/folder options/display
