I have read the FAQ’s on Renaming, have read several posts in the Renaming Forum, have looked long and hard at the Rename dialog box but simply do not see and obvious way to do a batch rename using ## wildcards for sequential numbering starting from a selected point.
I have included a screenshot of how it is done in ACDSee which has the easiest to use (and understand) rename function of any program that I have ever used.
I suspect that Opus Rename may be more powerful but a simple batch renaming eludes me.
As below. This assumes all the files are .JPG -- if they aren't then you can still do what you want but it makes it slightly more complex and I figure a simple example that only does one thing is easier to understand. Shout if you need the more complex version.
The ACDSee method is a LOT easier and faster to do.
In the Opus method I have to
1: Enter * in the Old Name field (do not have to do this in ACDSee as I already have the files selected in Opus and entering * is duplication of effort).
2: Have to enter [#] in the New Name (no brackets required with ACDSee).
3: Have to specify specific sequential numbering such as 01 (In ACDsee the ## already did that for me; #=1, ##-01, ###=001 etc).
4: The last rename used does not automatically present itself upon loading the Rename dialog, (ASDSee does).
I can live with this IF the Last Rename used always loaded first; any way to do this
I use mostly the same renaming method for all JPEG’s so having the Last Rename Used automatically load would be a good thing for me.
Change the rename button (or create a new one) to:Rename PRESET=last ADVANCED
That will open the rename dialog in advanced mode with the last rename selected.
I have created one called Rename... 01 Increments that I would like to use as the default but I do not see a way to enter it.

The arguments dropdown in the command editor shows you all the possible arguments for each command. The PRESET argument even includes a list of all your presets - so you can build the command you need without typing a thing...
