Button for Content Type: <Disabled>

..........versus.......

Hello, the Field Type Content Type (drop-down menu, see left) and the code Properties FORMATLIST (button menu, see right) dont seem to match. Since I dont use the drop-down menu, in particular i'd like to have a button in the button menu which disables the automatic folder format detection (possibly as toggle button).

In Preferences, the setting which corresponds to this is "Enable Folder Content Type detection for ..." (checkbox checked = Content Type , checkbox unchecked = Content Type )

("folder formats" and "content type" are more or less synonyms, arent they?)

The Content Type drop-down and the Folder Formats menu actually do slightly different things.

The Folder Formats menu just loads the folder format you select into the current lister, the same as if you select one of the favorite formats at the top of the list. It won't turn on Content Type Detection, even if you select one of the Content Type formats.

OTOH, the Content Type drop-down does turn Content Type Detection on or off (depending on what you select) as well as changing the folder format.

Is there a reason you want to be able to turn content type detection on and off without opening Preferences? It's usually something that you'd either always want on or always want off. If the aim is purely to recreate the drop-down in a menu form for completeness, I wouldn't bother; but if it is something you really need, I might be able to find a way to do it...

hi leo, thanks so much for the explanation. After reading it over and over and over again, i seem to understand the difference. in other words, when in the preferences the checkbox is unchecked and i play with any of the 8(!) choices (Properties FORMATLIST), the checkbox remains unchecked? i guess that's the main point i needed to know (because i had been wondering ..etc.. ).

so the two concepts are different and no synonyms OIC. then the one must be stronger than the other .. by overriding the latter. It will cost me some patience to find out the reciprocal action between the two (who overrides whom and under which circumstances). difficult topic! :sunglasses:
