Can't get jpg files to be described as "Picture" in Type col

Most of the others worked fine but images are always "JPG File" instead of "Picture".

The others worked by simply existing Dopus and restarting it.

I just now successfully changed my description for JPGs from "JPG File" to "This is a Picture". Had to restart Opus after doing so but it works just fine here.

Yeah I changed all of them but Image files are just "JPG File" and not "Picture" like they should be.

Wonder if it's a Vista bug?

I also can't work out how to change the JPEG (or PNG for that matter) file type names in Vista.

Explorer shows the same names as Opus so at least they agree. Not sure why the name in the registry is being ignored, though. There's a FriendlyTypeName value in the registry which points to something inside shell32.dll (presumably a translated name for the type of file?) but if I remove that value and reboot it doesn't seem to make a difference, and that value is there on my XP machines as well so it may be a red herring.

(I don't have the Type column in my listers (don't see the point of it when you can shift-click the Name column to sort by extension) but if I did it would bug me that JPEG images are called "JPG File" and PNG images are called "PNG File". Of course they are files, what else would they be!?)

Nudel I have learnt two new little tricks in as many days from you.

Firstly that you can use the middle mouse button in detail mode to select files. Then I find out about shift clicking the name column trick, now I know about this I'll remove the type column as well.

Nice one.

No red herring Leo... you've got it right. The FriendlyTypeName value data has linkage in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache key as the name of an actual key value... where the shimgvw.dll reference is then itself assigned the JPG Image or PNG Image names for the type descriptions... First time I've ever noticed it, and bchanging it manually in this spot modifies the name displayed in Explorer and Opus...

I don't think there's any negative side effect to changing it, and wonder if Opus could detect the presence of a FriendlyTypeName value when modifying the default file descriptor string, and then 'follow' it's reference to the MUICache key to update the data there as well?

Where is this FriendlyTypeName ?

For me it's under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\jpegfile

Well it sorta work out:

JPG + BMP + GIF + PNG = Proper in Dopus and opens in the viewer.

However GIF and PNG do open in Dopus viewer on the desktop they say "xxx File" still.

I've edited a bunch of keys and delete some as well, I hope it reboots alright after all the messing around with it.

After restarting explorer.exe it now only has PNG and GIF now so I guess it wasn't being refreshed.

Interestingly if I add anything to the "Open With" in Dopus it changes to back to "xxx file" in Dopus.

And in Explorer, presumably?

The way filetypes work in Windows is such a complicated mess.

It works fine if I use Windows Open With and leave the default box unchecked. I've added Windows Open With to the Dopus context menu awhile ago so it's convenient.

But yes I agree that filetypes in Windows is a HUGE cluster****
