Can't update comments on .mov files

I don't know what's preventing me from updating any meta data on .mov video files. It seems to just revert to old value. When I do it via windows properties, it works fine. See screencast: goo.gl/oR704t

Any ideas?

There is something missing at the top of your metadata pane. There should be a slim toolbar, containing the "apply", "abort", "toggle layout" parts, which is strange.

Oh, sorry about that. It's actually there but was just cut out of the screen. Here is a better view: goo.gl/oi2wy8

There is another setting you could check, -> preferences -> file operations -> metadata -> general -> apply changes automatically in the metadata panel.

Thanks for checking on that. I see that is checked, but I tried troubleshooting with it unticked as well. Also, I tried checking a few more options just in case (goo.gl/dkrxYg) but it had no affect.

In that case, maybe some anti virus program is "protecting" the files, while it is whitelisted for Explorer. Is that possible?

Doesn't seem so because I'm easily able to change all of the other tags without issues (Rating, Attributes, Tags, Date Created, Date Modified). I even tried starting Opus in admin mode just to check but nothing happened. Mainly, I was curious if this is normal behavior for everyone with .mov files or if I just need to keep trying to see what the problem is....

Whoaa.. I just noticed something interesting and cant even explain it well. See here: goo.gl/CIkTj0

Looks life all the changes I make are saved and only show up when I rename the file extension. When I change the extension back, the changes revert. Maybe it's referencing a different field?

Maybe you found some odd type of bug. That looks pretty weird.

Please try turning on Preferences / File Operations / Metadata / Update last modified file dates when setting metadata inside files and the similar options for ...in NTFS ADS directly below it.

Does that make a difference to what happens?

Leo, I tried it (goo.gl/8UIFA1) but it did not help. Just updated modified date and nothing else.

Here is some more testing: goo.gl/ccVRzp

Can someone confirm that renaming Comments in .MOV file works for them?

Works fine on my system. Did you change the desc_show_info unintentionally?

Kind regards,
Skeeve

Hi Skeeve! Thanks for confirming. Maybe I'll try installing a demo on a different pc to test with the same file. I didn't even know it was possible to change desc_show_info but I just checked and it's defaulted to "Metadata, user description and targets"

I tested this on a different machine with different OS and found a way that everyone should be able to reproduce this issue using steps below. It sounds like this is a bug or some kind of oversign because .mov file may be using two different description tags (goo.gl/N2O3sw)? Possibly one for video and one for audio, and the solution woudl be to update both somehow like via windows properties.

  1. Right click on .MOV file and edit the Comments field (goo.gl/ly191M)
  2. Now go to DOpus and try to edit that same file Comment tag (goo.gl/VK1oV0)
  3. Changes will not show up unless you go back to the File Properties in windows and remove the original Comment made.

See full steps: goo.gl/z04rnU

BTW, on a related note, anyone know a clear difference between the three different Description/Comments columns I found in DOpus (goo.gl/0LhP2I)? Seems they are usually the same but not always.

Thanks!

Confirmed that once I edited the comment with windows explorer, I cannot make any changes in Dopus after that.

I think you've discovered a bug.

Kind regards,
Skeeve
