Column width resizes randomly

Somewhat annoying but DO10 column widths seem to resize randomly. Now and again, I open a lister window to reveal truncated file names etc, as the columns are very narrow. I have to drag out to view the file names or other columns as they are all "squashed".

I've tried to recreate it and work out what is going on, but for the life of me it's random. Any ideas?

If you hover over the format lock at the bottom right, it will give you a hint of which formats you are currently using,
possibly leading you to the faulty setting.

If you look for my thread about the same problem, you'll see that, in my case, only the Default format was showning as being used. But the fix is the same for all ... go into the Preferences, drill down through the format and ensure that Auto-size is unchecked. I had to end up unchecking about a half-dozen entries before it quit autosizing on me.

That was my instinctual first reaction to reading this... but then I realized that it sounds like he has an almost opposite problem. If autosize columns was turned on - he wouldn't then be seeing column values (he mentioned file name) being "squished". So it sounds like he might have something actually set to a specific, static and very narrow width somewhere (maybe a content type format or something)... unless somethign really unexpected is actuall going 'wrong'.

I'm not sure this is the same problem. Autosizing (working properly) wouldn't shrink columns to a width more narrow than the contents of the columns, I wouldn't think.

Minutes apart Bob ... yeah, agree.

At any rate - abr gave good advice on what to look at to try and track down the offending folder format... It's a nifty featurette of v10 .

Thanks guys for all your help. I am playing with various things.

For the mo have ticked the Autosize box just to see what happens, as half the views didn't have this selected. It may cause more problems but I have to start somewhere! As you rightly say, my problem was "Squishing" not the other way around, which was why I was confused.

Reading through the other posts, this may be a function of going from DO9 to DO10 and actually I need to do a clean install.

I don't recall there being anything involved in upgrading from v9 to v10 that would affect this...

At any rate - did you understand abr's suggestion? A great new feature in v10 is that the format lock icon in the STATUS BAR (when hovered over with your mouse pointer) will tell you which folder formats your current folder view is being derived from. For instance, you may see something like "The current Folder Format comes from:" followed by one or more folder formats. You'd then go look at THOSE specific folder formats to see which one has an odd column setting.

It should prevent you from needing to aimlessly play around with things. Also, I don't think changing random formats to autosize should help you - unless you set in the actual format that is causing the "shrinkage", and if you come across that format - wouldn't you see that it's column is set to "20" or something else specifically narrow?
