Comparing files in dual displays

I have tons of comparisons to do in two folders at the time, and I wonder if there is some easy way to say "Compare the files in the two (dual) displays". Is there any way to compare not only file name and size, but also date/time?

Thank you,

Hans L

Tools -> Synchronize

Great, Leo, and thanks. I notice that files that are different are not marked. Is there any way to do that? (However, I assume that you can do the "opposite" by checking "Hide unaffected files"?)

Hans L

One more thing: if one wants to synchronize only on file names, is that possible (I can't see a way)?

Hans L

You probably need to investigate the various options in the synchronise window. Like most things Opus, it is powerful but complicated.

In particular, look at the filters. You can handle things like filenames in there.

Start with the Help file.

You might also want to investigate the Duplicate File Finder as a tool for looking for things with identical filenames.

Michael, will check.. However, I do not want to look for identical files, I want to look for "unindentical" files.

Hans L

So you want to look for non-matching files, using only the filenames? That doesn't really make sense

Jon, who the heck said life makes sense?

After having worked with the files in question for a while now, I know that files with a certain time-difference are most likely the same. I have many, many files where the time-difference is either 1 hour or 1 second (don't ask, I have no idea!). I simply have to assume that they are the same if they have the same name. So, as you can now see, it makes sense for me to compare the files of two folders and only look at those that are different, and synchronize.

Hans L

You probably want to set the Compare mode to "date (different)" or "date (newer)", but I'm not sure as it's not entirely clear what you mean by "different".

Leo, you are absolutely right. Sorry, Jon and other readers. What I wanted to say was "So, as you can now see, it makes sense for me to compare the files of two folders and only look at those with different names, and synchronize.

Like I said "You probably need to investigate the various options in the synchronise window."

Don't forget to create a filter that saves any settings that you adjust in that bit of the process. It is all too easy to spend time working out how to perform some complicated process, only to forget how you did it when you next return to the same task.

Michael, I will experiment, although it seems as if "byte comparison" might work better than "name comparison".

Hans L

If it works great. But if you find the display gets confusing, then filtering can be very powerful. There are many options in there that could add to your use of the "byte comparison".

I mention that because I have been playing around with them recently and have found several ways of achieving the same thing.

It can also help to have different approaches should you feel the urge to turn your operation into a "button".

Sounds good, Michael, and inspiring. Thanks!/Hans L
