Copy function

Although i have read the notes on copy and Sync I am still a bit confused, or maybe just paranoid, about overwriting original images.
generally, if a file is bigger it is more than likely the original image. Usually, apart form the occasional bit of finger trouble, if I edit a file it will be to crop it or otherwise reduce it in size. In such cases I will also rename it.

My concern is when I come to sync working and archive folders. If I use one way copy and sync left to right which compare selection is the best one to use to ensure that I don't overwrite an original file?

I am assuming that using the date size option would only copy a file across if the older file is smaller and if date is newer

The same questions really apply to a simple copy using drag and drop from the working folder to the archive one and selecting ignore if identical.

Sorry if this is explained fully in Help - but if so I must have missed it!

Thanks - Ian

Lots in the manual so it's easy to miss things. Here are the Synchronize panel docs for reference.

Just under the screenshot at the top is the main thing you want, where it describes the different modes.

Date (newer) seems like the one you're most likely to want. That will copy newer files over older files.

There is also Date (newer) or size but you probably don't want that as it would copy a file if (the date is newer) or (the size is different). That would mean it would copy an older file over a newer file if the size differed, which is probably not right for your scenario.

Skip Identical will skip things with identical sizes and identical dates.

If you're using the Opus 12 public beta, you'll also find a Keep Newer option, which may do what you're looking for:

Thanks Leo for the comprehensive reply. Much happier about copying things now.
