Copy progress window - 3 issues

#1. Copy/Move with reporting popup window is one awesome feature of Opus and of my arguments why everybody should have Opus. I like to use large icons setting under desktop settings. When copying or moving the files large filetype icon is covering part of the text (please take a look at the picture). This empty space should be flexible and according to the current icon setting (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size). Somebody might like to have even bigger icons (for example using some windows enhancer like XPize).

#2. Time remaining estimation at the file copying process. IMHO the time estimation algorithm does very lousy job for such a simple calculation. I always use automatic prescanning prior to copying in order to have full ETA information. The behavour is easy to check when you try to copy HDD > HDD any windows installation with many small files.

#3. Another thing about this process is that many times when copying commences and goes on for a longer time, there is no ETA information whatsoever before HDD stops catching a breath. It is regardless of delayed progress indicators being disabled or set to different ms.

Are there some workarounds so far?

1 - I've had the same issues about the icon size. But then I bought a new widescreen ThinkPad and with the resolution 1680x1050, it's no longer a problem! (just kidding)

I had asked about a year ago if this dialog window could be customized. I can't remember now but I think I wanted to add some other tracking measures.

#1: Anyone know how to change to large icons in Vista? I can't find the option. Or is it something that only some video drivers offer? I've never been sure if the large icons option was an "official" part of Windows. Maybe in Vista it's been replaced by the new DPI settings, which only a few apps support so far.

#2 and #3 are, I bet, both due to copying lots of small files. The progress dialog's time remaining count only seems to consider the time it takes to copy data, not the small amount of time it takes to actually create each file. It's often fine, but when copying lots of small files the copy time is tiny and the file creation time becomes large, so the time remaining count is quite wrong. The other problem is that files small enough to be copied in a single read/write don't contribute to the speed timer, so if you're copying a lot of them it doesn't get updated.

I'd like to see these things improved, too.

I don't know about Vista, but it is just regular to XP (Display Properties > Appearance > Effects "Use Large Icons"). How large is defined by that regkey.

Hmmm, I am not so sure about this. I just made some test with files that are mostly of 3-15 MB, and only a few that are of some kB'.s It showed some estimation at the end. Please take a look:

Looks like I was wrong.

Are you copying to and from normal local folders? (Not inside zip files or anything like that.)

Yes. This example is local hdd to local hdd. It is strange that it shows erratic behavior. I just did few test on the same folder set. Once it shows ETA somewhere at near copying end, sometimes it finishes copying without displaying any ETA info. I believe this entire procedure needs complete redo. It is one of the best Opus features (IMHO of course), but unfortunately very unreliable.

Believe it or not this sort of thing is actually very hard to do. Even Microsoft haven't nailed it yet - the "estimated time" thing in Vista seems just as inaccurate as in XP (or even more so - most of the time it seems to just sit there saying "calculating time" right up until the copy actual finishes).

The Opus one was designed primarily with FTP transfers in mind, which is why it's only on for FTP by default. Its calculations are based on the speed the actual data is transferred, which these days is pretty quickly - sometimes too quickly for the resolution of the timer that Opus uses. So yes, this will need to be improved in the future.

Sorry if it sounds stupid but... where can I enable that copy dialog?

I've looked for it but I can't find it...

Thanks a lot

Desktop context menu / View / Large|Medium|Classic Icons

Not those icons.

On XP, at least with some gfx drivers, there's an option to make all the icons throughout the system large. Maybe it's been removed because it broke so many things (not just Opus's progress dialog, although I think that's fixed now anyway). Or maybe I'm thinking of the large fonts option? Ah, it's not important anyway.

Nevermind, I've found it with the super cool settings filter. Great features! (copy progress dialog and settings filter)

RE: Large Icons.

On my home PC (running WinXP), I used XPIZE (xpize.net/) to get the large icons. It's well done in my opinion... and stable... no problems thus far.
