Crashing at shutdown

Hi,

Since a couple of months and releases, I have DO crashing at shutdown (and thereby also blocking the shutdown process) in about 50% of the shutdown cases.

I'm just posting this without much added info, to ask if this is happening solely with me, or perhaps other people are experiencing the same.

Will post a screenshot of the specific errormessage whenever it happens again. (Hopefully I will be able to, since the OS is in it's shutdown phase, don't know if it will allow me to press the screenshot hotkey, and save the screenshot somewhere.

Happening on XP SP3.

FWIW I have never had a problem like this and I'm also running XP SP3.

I have tried a complete uninstall/reinstall, to no avail.
Guess it can't be anything else than some corrupt configuration file.

Try disabling plugins, shell extensions, etc. and also see if it happens after viewing a particular folder, or particular types of files (e.g. video files).

The FAQs on crashes and general problem solving should help with how to disable plugins/shell extensions.

I have the same problem. Not crashing but hanging (not shutting down) and preventing Windows from shutting down. Its almost certain to be a conflict with some other misbehaving program, but have spent many hours looking and experimenting and found no cure. There is a point where its easier to just reinstall windows and move on.

Hi,

The problem keeps on occuring, I've disabled ALL plugins except the following :

  • PCX
  • Targa
  • Audio Tags
  • RAW Digital Camera
  • JPEG2000

It seems I'm not alone in the boat, and the problem only occurs at Reboot/Shutdown.

Don't know If DO dumps some crash report when it crashes, or if it does where I could find it, so I could send it to GPSoft.

Why haven't you disabled those ones?

Did you try disabling shell extensions?

Did you try the other things in my post, like whether it happens only after viewing certain folders?

Does it happen if you exit Opus without shutting down Windows?

Hi Leo,

Right now, I disabled ALL of them, including Shell extensions.
Regarding the folders, well I cannot remember the couple of hundreds/thousands of folders I visit during a PC session....

It never happens when closing DO, only when rebooting/Shutting down the system.

And? Does it still crash?

Still waiting for the crash

So far so good....

I solved this problem by reinstalling Windows and then keeping track of each program subsequently installed. It started again after installing freeware called File Box Extender. This program is quite useful, basically provides a favorites list in your "save as" dialog boxes. The interesting thing is that this program ceased development in 2004 (ie no changes) and I had been using it since before then with previous versions of Opus, including v9x. So the conflict only occurred with the latest version of Opus, something has been changed to cause this.
Nevertheless, Opus is a more valuable program than whatever it is conflicting with so the other program has to go. Consider any programs you have running in the background that have anything to do with directories and try closing them with task manager. Then see what happens.

Aaahh, File Box Extender!

I'm also using this tool since like years, and since about six months, Dopus crashed at almost every Windows shutdown (btw. Dopus also crashes/hangs very often after previewing files in the preview pane!).

Unfortunately, File Box Extender has incredibly useful features such that I can't disable or uninstall it.

Anyway, I have tried and added Dopus to the exception list of File Box Extender for now. Let's see if that helps.

Regards David.P

If you want that fixed, work out which files / formats / plugins cause the crash and let us know.

Let us know if adding Opus to the exception list stops the problem and I'll write up a FAQ about it.

hrmm. i have been experiencing this for ages too, and i don't use file box extender.

but knowing that it is probably related to a 3rd party app should help narrow things down a bit
