Custom Layout

The customisation of layouts in Directory Opus seems to be limited (as far as I have been able to figure out)... is it possible to customise it to any extent I like..
can we add a viewer pane as a small box below the folder tree..
can we have the viewer pane or folder tree in-between two file displays..
can we have seperate viewer panes for each file display..
can we have more than 2 file displays...
..the list can go on

am I over-looking such a feature in Dopus?

I'll tell you right now, you will never get more than two file displays in one Window Jon is very against that idea.

You should get acquainted with the Opus concept of a Lister Layout, a saved set of lister windows. Search for those terms in the manual or Help. You can accomplish some of what you want with a Lister Layout, like a Viewer Pane for each lister window.

I have setup 2 listers that are different, wouldn't that suffice.

I can see the point against more than 2 file displays per lister, as it wastes space and you soon start asking yourself, what's the point in only having a small space to display the contents of a folder. Personally I'd probably go on the side against more than two File Displays per lister, for the following reason:

Folder Tabs are an elegant solution to wasting space across a lister with multiple File Displays. Folder Tabs are a great way to transform a Lister from an SDI to an MDI (Single and Multi-document) style interface. It doesn't waste space and you can use drag-n-drop on the actual Tabs.

I use multiple listers per session - but if I need to keep together folder displays (a good example is sub-folders) then I will use Folder Tabs. This provides flexibility plus management of your screen.

As far as the Viewer Pane, I think some flexibility as in where it is "docked" could be useful.

I think, my point is not clearly conveyed yet...

The four things I mentioned is just an "ILLUSTRATIVE" list... the requirement is not specifically those... the real requirement is the "FLEXIBILITY" that could be offerred to the end user.

As of now, I guess the layouts are a bit rigid that we can't even have the preview pane on the left/top and the file display on the right/bottom (pl correct me if i am wrong)

If you want to have an idea of what I am talking about, you could take a look at a software called Font Expert ..you can download and check how flexible and easy it is to tweak the layout in the software.

About the need for having more than two file displays.. it could be that three different displays (eg. details in one, thumbnails in the other and so on...) are needed for the same folder in a single lister ...AGAIN! this is just a possibility ...the main point is the flexibility the program could offer to anyone who needs it (without actually judging why it is needed)
