Details mode: "highlight full row" with different color than Name column

I'd like to make a suggestion for an option which I think could improve the usability of details view a little more.

In preferences, under File Display Modes / Details / Appearance, there are currently two (useful!) options:

File Selection: 'Full width of the name column'
  • The advantage of this is that a larger area is available for selecting a file but also not so large an area that there is no room for drag-selecting multiple files or interacting with the folder "background" in other ways.
Option: 'Always highlight full row'
  • An advantage of this is that when the details view is very wide, selecting a file gives a kind of visual "ruler" to be able to see what is in the same row easily. Especially on a smaller screen or Dual Vertical mode when the width of the details view sometimes requires scrolling to the right.

I would like to use both of these options, except for this drawback: When "Always highlight full row" is enabled, it becomes less visually obvious where exactly the "selection area" ends. It would be really nice if there was a way to have the best of both worlds, i.e. a way to visually see the whole selected row when scrolled sideways, but also visually be able to see where the "selection area" ends for drag-and-drop purposes etc.

So my suggestion is for a way to change the "selected background" color and focus outline color of the selected or focused row separately from the Name column. So that the Name column looks the same as when option 1 above is on and option 2 above is off, but at the same time the other columns in the currently selected row can have a selected background color and focus outline color which is visible but a lot dimmer, for example 30% of the opacity of the Name column's selected color.

It might be better to explain with mockup images of what I'd like to be achievable:

Selected background colour for non-Name columns: (image)

Focused outline colour for non-Name columns: (image)

That's it! Thanks for considering my suggestion.

Good ideas, we've put them on the list.

When using that combination of settings, an option that might be useful now is to give the Name column a background color to help highlight the clickable area. If you want to try that, it's done under Preferences / File Display Columns / Appearance.
