I have a brand new Laptop with w 8.1 (preinstalled) and i installed DO 10.5.7.0 (5215) x64.
yesterday i tried (in DO 10) to access a LAN-directory on my other LAptop in my own LAN.
Windows crashed with a BSOD ("DPC Watchdog Violations").
Maybe its not an issue with DO 10. Therefore i want to ask if i should upgrade to Directory Opus 11?
Do 10 has been discontinued and maybe its not fully compatible with W 8.1.
I was runnig DO 10 on 3 Laptops (with Win 7) and had no problems (since 2 or 3 years).
Application-level software like Opus cannot cause a BSOD no matter what it does. At most Opus could trigger a problem in a lower-level component, but lots of other things are likely to be able to trigger it as well.
BSOD are due to low-level components such as physical hardware, hardware firmware, hardware drivers or things like anti-virus software which run at a similar level to drivers. When those things crash the whole operating system falls over, but when higher-level applications crash the operating system has them isolated, protecting itself and other applications, and can carry on.
If you search for "DPC Watchdog Violations" there are lots of threads all talking about it in Windows 8 with varied advice. I would look through those threads to see if the situations match any of the hardware or anti-virus that you're using, and try the suggestions in them.
Upgrading to Opus 11 will gain you better integration with Windows 8.1 and newer features, and we obviously like when people upgrade , but the upgrade may not help with the BSOD, since it won't be Opus that's causing the BSOD. At best you might find that whatever it was Opus 10 was doing that tripped up another component is slightly different in Opus 11 and no longer does so, but it may also be the same, or start happening when you do other things unrelated to Opus. So it's best to track down the root cause whether you decide to get Opus 11 or not.
Having said that, you can get a free trial version of Opus 11 to see if it helps, if you want to. GPSoftare Downloads. If you use Settings > Backup & Restore to save a copy of your config first, you can then go back to Opus 10 and your old config if you decide to, without losing anything.
