DO 9.0.0.6 Freeze Requires Reboot

Occasionally DO will freeze and I can't kill the process by any means. I've tried Windows Task Manager, Sysinternals Process Explorer, Sysinternals pskill, and cygwin kill -9 with no response. I have to reboot the machine to get going again.

This problem just started happening out of the blue and seems to occur when I eject my iPod using "ContextMenu FILE="I:" VERB="Eject"" or ejecting my DVD drive.

Not sure if this has any bearing, but the timeframe coincides with my installing Rockbox on my iPod.

TIA
Maynard

Are you on Vista by any chance?

I recently had some really, really odd problems copying files to my iPod in iTunes. After about 24 hours of ranting about how Apple can't write Windows software to save their lives I realised that the same problem affected Opus and Explorer and seems to be an issue with either Vista or my motherboard drivers. (Sorry for blaming you, Mr. Jobs!)

The problem that I had was that trying to copy a particular music file (thousands of others were fine but this one file always caused a problem when copying to the iPod) the program doing the copying would lock-up half-way through and could not be killed. Trying to shutdown the machine wouldn't even work as the program would not exit and hung the shutdown. It didn't matter which program did the copy so it had to be something underlying all of them, rather than the programs themselves.

I tried with anti-virus (NOD32) disabled and there was no difference. I didn't go as far as to uninstall the AV software.

Strangely, I solved the problem by plugging the iPod into a different USB port. I was originally using one of the USB ports in my monitor (Dell 2407) and I found I could copy the file over fine if I moved the iPod into one of the ports on my PC itself.

I'm still none the wiser, but that worked around the issue for me. (I have all the latest drivers and BIOS for my motherboard and all the latest hotfixes for Vista, including the one for iPod corruption.) It's quite odd.

I do still have another problem which is that inserting the same USB disk device (iPod or memory card) twice without rebooting between will usually bluescreen my machine. Quite annoying!

Vista, and even my nForce motherboard, have been pretty stable apart from this weird USB stuff...

Anyway, that's a long description to basically say that it's probably not Opus and there's something strange going on with iPods, and USB in general, on Vista, at least in my experience, and if you try in some other programs you'll most likely get the same un-killable lock-up problem that you're seeing in Opus.

Thanks for the response nudel. I'm running DO on XP SP2 with all the latest hotfixes etc.

I'm still experiencing the same problem but now it's getting worse and I'm seeing DO randomly (but frequently) freeze under other conditions as well.

  • copy/move operations between lister panes via command buttons
  • selecting "Customize" on a toolbar[/ul]
Oddly, the iPod/USB problem I first experienced disappeared after adding another USB2 card and updating drivers etc. Now it seems to be related to something else.

When the program hangs, I cannot kill the dopus.exe process by any means. I've tried every utility I could find and it just won't die. Sometimes I have to just turn the system off because "Shut Down" does not respond. Logging off and back on again doesn't work either as the process continues to run. Reinstalling DO didn't help either.

Any suggestions on how I can debug this and forward the info to GPS tech support would be greatly appreciated. It's getting to the point where DO is becoming unusable.

Thanks
Maynard

I would try removing the button/menu item which runs the context-menu eject command you mentioned in your first post.

Also, if you have any toolbar or menu items which referencs network drives (including simply having their letters in Drive Buttons lists) try removing them to see if it clears up.

I don't know if it's related but Windows still (well, not seen it yet in Vista but definitely saw it in XP SP2) gets into locking fits if things reference network drives on unreachable machines. (I've seen it lock up Explorer, Opus and many other programs.)

Do you have any entries in Event Viewer at the time close to freeze?

X.

I get the following system event logged every time the freeze occurs:

I have someway similar problems, but I've tracked them down to my card reader and the dreaded EventID51 (see here).
