DO11: Folder Tree Issues

Hi,

I've noted various issues with the folder tree using Opus 11.0 Beta 2, Win 7 64bit. These didn't occur with Opus 10 IIRC. Explorer is fine, and the only application that seems affected is Opus itself. I have only changed one setting from the installation defaults (enabled folder formats), and with that setting enabled or disabled, there are no differences. Only the folder tree is affected, the file panes seem fine. There is nothing set to double left click action for all files, all files and folders, all folders in settings-->file types.

Rather than describe them, I made a video. There are four issues in all.

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/105 ... 2_edit.wmv (416KB, WMV - this one shows all 4 issues, but doesn't really show the effect of issue #4 all that well, so I made a further additional video just for it)

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/105 ... 8_edit.wmv (232KB, WMV - this one shows just issue #4. The text is slightly incorrect - the folder is not actually selected, but rather it is highlighted and the next click will select it)

Thanks.

Please try turning off Preferences / Folder Tree / Options / Position selected item in the middle of the tree, if it is on.

A brief text description of the four issues would help us here as the videos do not give much time to see or read what they are trying to show, or when one issue ends and the next begins. The videos are useful (thanks for making them!), but a brief text description would help a lot to make sure we've understood correctly (assuming the option I mentioned above doesn't cure things by itself; I think it may cure at least some of the things you're seeing there).

Hi Leo,

That option was enabled, but disabling it made no difference - nothing at all changed. The four issues are:

  1. Double clicking a folder to open it, opens a totally separate folder elsewhere in the folder tree.
  2. Double clicking a folder to open it does not actually open it. It selects it, but then a second double click is required to open it.
  3. Double clicking an open folder to close it does not actually close it (the first double click usually just selects it, and a second double click will often then close it).
  4. The folder tree moves up and down apparently randomly as I double click. This has two problems (so really there are 5 issues I suppose):
    a. This very visually distracting (I'm sensitive to visually distracting things, and even relatively minor visual changes such as the folders changing positions by moving up and down in the folder tree tend to annoy me a great deal)
    b. Sometimes (depending on where my mouse is positioned), the folder move means that my mouse suddenly becomes positioned over the top of another folder elsewhere in the tree, and if I then click, that folder is affected by my mouse clicking. So for example, I could double click a folder, the folder tree jumps half a screen downwards, my mouse ends up over the top of a folder which isn't located anywhere near the folder I clicked on, and then when I next double click, that other folder is affected.

Regards.

Thanks for all that information, this should be fixed in the next beta.

Hi jon,

Was that the Beta 3 that was posted, or intended for Beta 4?

(I did try Beta 3 just in case, some things seem improved - like #1 - but others have not changed at all).

Thanks.

Beta 3, and it's definitely fixed as far as we can tell.

Unfortunately not for me. Doing some quick testing:

Seems fixed (at least I couldn't make it happen so far).

Not fixed. Seems to happen more frequently with Beta 3. Previously, double click would work about 50% of the time, it now only works about 10% of the time.

Not fixed. Seems to happen less frequently with Beta 3 however but definitely still present.

Seems fixed, but only because I disabled 'Position selected item' (disabling it did nothing under Beta 2). With that setting enabled, it still happens (even single clicking a folder which is already in the middle of the folder tree to select it is enough to make the folder tree jump up or down).

Seems fixed, but only because I disabled 'Position selected item' (with that setting enabled, it still happens).

Whatever the problem is only affects the folder tree and double clicking. If I click a folder's arrow icon in the folder tree to expand it, it is fine. If I double click a folder in one of the file panes, no problems. And as mentioned, neither Explorer or any other app installed has double click issues.

With the remaining problems, would it be possible to make a video showing them, like before, but with the whole window visible in the video?

The problems which were fixed seemed to be due to toolbars being shown or hidden in response to folder changes, which wasn't visible in the area in the video but we guessed was the cause (and then were able to reproduce). Maybe something else is also happening that we couldn't see in the original video.

Sure, I will see what I can do over the next day or two. I have done some more testing, and I was wrong about the 'position selected item' setting fixing the folder tree jumping when it is disabled. It doesn't - it vastly reduces the amount it occurs, but even single clicking some folders is enough to make the folder tree jump. Though this may be because Opus seems to display a new toolbar when you click on some folders, and removes the toolbar when you move to other folders. Thus, when the toolbar displays, it pushes the folder tree down as it no longer has the same amount of vertical height to display in that it once die (and when the toolbar vanishes, the Folder Tree has more height to use so it jumps up). That toolbar is set across the entire width of the Opus window, including over the top of the area where the Folder Tree displays. If the toolbar had a restriction that it could not display over the top of that area, it might fix this.

Anyway, I will uninstall and reinstall Opus (to reset the settings) so I can start fresh. I've been randomly disabling settings that were enabled and enabling settings that were disabled, just to see if anything would fix the problem (Opus is not useable for me with the folder tree acting like this), but with no luck. I think I have reset all the settings to their defaults, but a total reinstall would make sure.

I have my fingers crossed that the old wishlist item for Opus to get a 'reset to defaults' option will make it into Opus one day. Even with the older versions of Opus I would quite often have to reset the settings to their defaults (it was too easy to get Opus into a state where you can't get out of), and with its mandatory "you need to reboot once you have uninstalled and you have to reboot once you install" requirement, reinstalling Opus is a pain in the rear end.

That is one of the new features in Opus 11, not a bug. Note that the mouse cursor position is adjusted automatically when this happens, and beta 3 fixed a problem which meant double-clicks didn't work when the mouse cursor was moved (they do now).

If you don't like the automatic toolbars you can turn them off through Preferences / File Display Modes / Toolbars. Perhaps turn that off anyway and see if that's all you're seeing (i.e. whether there is another issue as well, or if it's just the movement due to the mode-sensitive toolbars that you're noticing).

Ooh, thanks - I didn't know there was a way to disable the toolbars. Anyway, I have reinstalled Opus, so I will go through that list and see which problems I can reproduce now.

Ok, with the default settings of DO 11 Beta 3:

#1: Can't reproduce.
#2: Still happens.
#3: Still happens.
#4a: Can't reproduce.
#4b: Can't reproduce.

As I am uncomfortable sharing my folder structure with the world, is there somewhere I can upload the video to support privately? Not through the forums in other words.

If it's not too large to email you can send it to leo@gpsoft.com.au

(Alternatively, you could put it on YouTube or similar, set so only someone who knows the URL can view it, and email just the URL.)

Thanks, email sent with link to video file.
