DO12 - Rename dialog

Hi,

I am testing the new DO 12 beta and I've got a question about the rename function.

I have never used the batch renaming in Directory Opus and I just like renaming multiple files by hand. In the previous version I selected files for renaming (in Power Mode), hit the rename function button and I could rename the files in sequence one by one (renamed one, hit Enter, renamed another one and so on). Now in this new DO 12 rename window I can only rename the first file in row and when I hit Enter to rename the next file the window closes and game over. I must select and rename each file individually.

Is there a way how I can make this behave the same way as in DO 11?

Thanks!

What you are refering to is "Inline Rename", press F2 to do it. The rename button always opened the rename tool if I'm correct, so nothing changed in this regard from my point of view.

Using "Inline Rename" style within the rename tool is something you probably just expect now, since you can alter the names there directly as well and is something I would like to see as well.. o)

The rename tool winow closing on pressing enter while you edit names manually is maybe something to look at for the devs, I got confused by that as well at least.

There used to be a "simple" Rename dialog which would ask you for each file, but we've removed that since it was mostly redundant.

As tbone says, F2 to inline rename is probably what you want. You can use the up/down cursor keys (or tab/shift-tab) to move between files and rename each in sequence.

The Rename dialog also allows you to edit filenames directly in the preview list (if you turn off its macro mode), but there isn't really a reason to use it instead of basic F2 inline rename if you just want to type new names for each file and are not using any of the dialog's other features.

I think normal file display inline rename behavior with up/down cursor movement in the new rename dialog ~could become a nice-to-have feature in a few cases.

Like if we're going through several rounds of renames against a file set, using the new Apply button (thanks for that). I quite often have scenarios like that where there are a couple of uncooperative files that need a little bit of manual help. And I do that back out in the file display before now. But if I've selected a group of files spread out in a folder with lots of other items between them in the list in the normal file display which I didn't want included in the the rename operation, it'd be a nice benefit to only have to navigate through the other items I included in the rename operation to make the few one-off changes I need to make, which might only against a small subset of the files in that folder.

Anyway - like I said - I think it's a "nice-to-have" for some cases, while I'm otherwise enjoying getting used to the new dialog.

I'm not sure what the cursor keys do there but you already basically have that now.
