I execute this command from a shortcut
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,/n,c:\temp
and it opens Dopus 9 (previously Dopus 8) just fine
the trouble is that every few times, couple hours apart, the View, Folder Tree keeps disappearing and I manually turn it back on - what might cause Dopus to forget it?

Preferences - Listers - Options: Update Default Lister automatically when closing a Lister
If it's on try turning it off. Maybe you are sometimes closing the tree manually for some reason, then closing the lister and unintentionally changing the Default Lister in the process.
If the shortcut is under your control then it might be better to run Opus directly instead of via Explorer.exe, too.
