The fix isn't out yet. We just put out the new 13.8 stable release, but the fix is part of 13.8.1, which will be the first beta after that. (We'd like to test the change for a while before putting it into a stable release, although it seems good from initial in-house testing.)
Anyway, something changed. The problem is probably solved. And now I must get rid of those additional programs that I use to search, delete and rename files
PS Strike that out, it happened again.
The new version probably solved the problem for good. I'm searching folders and delete files from the resulting searches extensively, to test the release. I even changed in the meta plugins the browser from internet explorer to edge and opened a url in the viewer, nothing happened, no freezing, no shutting down. I still need a little time to test further (I had some drawbacks in the past) but it seems the issue is finally solved.
