Downgrading 12.5 to 12.4

Can I downgrade from 12.5 back to 12.4 without messing anything up?

Yes. Why would you want to?

Because 12.4 freezes frequently for me while browsing directories, at least on Bitlocker volumes. I have not changed anything else within DO or my system, that I am aware of. And I'm not prepared to send logs and all the rest.

Thanks for the answer.

So you'd rather stay on 12.4 forever rather than let us help solve your problems?

it's your choice of course, but it seems a strange one.

I figured I would check back eventually and hope it was fixed or no longer an issue for whatever reason. I don't think it's strange at all, given how much time I spend troubleshooting and working around issues on many different devices, with "I can't reproduce, it's your imagination, start fresh" being a familiar mantra that is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I'm not accusing you guys of saying that. I'm just explaining what I wanted to avoid.

I also work with alerting/troubleshooting platforms for a living, and when issues are reported, "I can't reproduce, it's your imagination, prove it" is a mantra I hear constantly.

But if you're willing, please advise on how I can help you resolve this. The issue is a total freeze of DO. The easiest way for me to reproduce it is to navigate to a directory on a Bitlocker volume that has lots of video files in it. I've already tried disabling my AV, to no avail.

It's worth checking if you see the same with 12.4, if you only started seeing the problem in 12.5, as that would confirm whether the version change is just a coincidence or part of the problem. It could be something that has changed in Opus but could also be something that changed in another part of your system, or to do with the files themselves, at the same time.

The big Windows 10 Creators Update was released around the same time as 12.5 and has created numerous problems in different areas of the OS, so that's something else to keep in mind, although I'm not ruling out that it could be to do with a change in Opus 12.5 either, of course.

Please install 12.4 over the top of 12.5, then reboot at the end when prompted, and see what happens afterwards.

If you wish, you can also take a snapshot of the process when it appears to be frozen and send it to us for examination. We can sometimes use that to tell which part of the code is freezing, and whether it's our code or an external DLL. Here's how to do that:

While it's happening, please go to Task Manager, then the Details tab, right-click dopus.exe and select Create Dump File.

Do that 4 or 5 times, and it should create something like:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\dopus.DMP
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\dopus (2).DMP
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\dopus (3).DMP
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\dopus (4).DMP
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\dopus (5).DMP

The files will be large, but compress well.

If sending more than one file, using the 7z format instead of zip will give a much reduced size. You can do this via the Archive Files button in Opus.

Please zip or 7z the files and email them to crashdumps@gpsoft.com.au (it's best not to post full dumps publicly to the forum).

Hi, I have Win 10 prof 64. I am having a similar problem, after I upgraded to 12.5 the program crashes freezes frequently, in particular when you want to create a new directory from Dopus... and the only choice is to terminate with task manager,
I'll see if I have time tomorrow to do those dumps you mentioned above.
The other issue is more difficult to explain, the program loses the groups, or layouts or toolbars, then I have to do this again. If I backup the full config, and then restore. later, still get these issues and the layouts, groups, toolbar sets don't come as I had them So far I have not figure out how all these customization settings work together, ideally you may suggest me a part of the help where I can read to understand. But I would prefer it were easier.
Thanks

That sounds like something isn't configured properly. Please start a separate thread for it with details of what you're doing (e.g. opening a particular layout) and expecting vs what is happening and we can help there. Let's keep this thread to the subject it is about.

Just tried to install 12.4, rebooted, and the about box was still reporting 12.5.

So I then went back to:

https://resource.dopus.com/c/New-Releases

And tried again. When I click "Directory Opus 12.4", I get a page that clearly says "Directory Opus 12.4". I download the "Universal version" at http://www.gpsoft.com.au/DScripts/download.asp?id=60 , and yet it installs 12.5.

Please advise on how I can revert to 12.4.

The link is always to the same URL which has the latest version.

If you need old installers and didn't keep them, we can upload them for you.

But you might also want to try the recent 12.5.1 beta which has a fix that may resolve the problem you were seeing. (Hard to say without any of the dump files we requested.)

OK, thanks. I know what dump files can contain, which is why I was in no hurry to provide them. I passed on the beta after reading the change logs. But I'll try it now. Appreciated.

I have not tested extensively, but I haven't had this issue occur since updating to 12.5.1 beta. It started happening less frequently (but still occasionally occurred) with 12.5 as well before I even installed the beta, for reasons unknown (perhaps the recent Windows 10 updates). Thank you.
