DVD-RAM slowing dopus

I use DVD-RAMs as backup disks for my MP3s, Photos etc. But whenever I use Dopus to copy files from the harddisk to DVD-RAM it runs really slowly, we're talking upto 5 minutes to switch between Dopus windows.

I have this problem with any make of DVD-RAM drive and any format of DVD-RAM disk (UTF, Fat32). It's not to do with performance of the PC, I've been seeing this problem on 2.6GHz and higher P4 processors.

I've not worried about it before, but for a multithreaded app that claims it can do more than one thing at a time, running like a pig, on a dual Xeon 2.66GHz dual core processor, there's got to be something not quite right.

Looking at task manager CPU % is around 6% and there's a couple of GB of free RAM.

The really terrible thing is, it's quicker to use Explorer to do this task, and I really don't want to  .

cheers

Maybe have a play with the copy buffer size settings in Preferences / File Operations and see if it makes any difference.

Another thing that may be worth a try:

If you're copying in Explorer, does the problem still affect Opus, or does it look like everything is triggered by using Opus to do the copy?

Do you have the DVD-RAM drive visible on your toolbars/menus, for example in a Drive Buttons list?

If so, try removing it to see if that helps. (*See below.) It's possible that when you activate the lister or happen to mouse-over the icon that it triggers the icon to be refreshed which means the DVD-RAM will be read while copying, which can be slow.

Similarly, any action that has to refresh a directory on the DVD-RAM will run slowly since the (presumably relatively slow) drive is being written to. If you're displaying folders on the drive and/or moving around folders on it then you can speed things up by removing columns like Description and any others which require Opus to open up all the files and look at their contents, instead of do a simple directory scan.

  • You can filter particular types of drives, or particular drive letters, in and out of the drivebuttons lists by changing the command behind them. To quickly remove a particular letter, let's say X, you could use this:
Go DRIVEBUTTONS=-X
