One request i'm thinking of :
i know about Virtual Folders but what would be nice is to be able to join several folders into only one virtual folder.
Example :
I have a "Photos" folder which contains several folders named "2004","2005","2006", etc
What would be very nice would be to be able to make a virtual folder named "all photos" in which you would see all the contents of 2004,2005,2006,etc
Of course the problem would be when two files have the same name, but the names could be suffixed by an information saying from which real folder they come ..
You can also do it using Flat View from the parent folder, which will be dynamic unlike collections where you have to manually update them.
Another way of doing it is to use NTFS junctions but that can lead to problems if you do the wrong thing so it's not recommended if one of the other methods works for what you want to do.
One question, three answers ! Thanks for your fast support ..
Yesterday night i thought about my question and realized my example could be done with just a flatview .. But for more complex problems, yes, the collections are the solution
I was too fast.. No it doesn't work in Collections as it is not dynamic
if I put my 2004,2005,2006,2007 folders in the collections and i add files to the source 2007 folder, my collection won't be automatically updated..
Am i wrong ?
Unfortunatly collections aren't dynamic at this point in time. A few people have asked for this in the past and it would be a very nice addition. If they could work in a similair way to virtual folders that would be perfect.
I'm a little confused about what you mean by "dynamic." I made a File Collection that consists of a bunch of folders whose contents I transfer from time to time to a flash drive. When I do this, I open a given folder in my File Collection and look to see whether there are new or updated files that I want to add to the flash drive. Obviously, the File Collection folders show any new content; if they didn't, there'd be no point in my using them in this way. Thus, if I had a file called Photos2007 in my File Collection, if I added photos to that folder they would also show up in the File Collection folder. What am I failing to understand here? (There's always something )
Lets say I do a search using opus find in the my picture folder for all *.jpg files. Using the bottom find panel the results are displayed as a collection. I can then save this collection and come back later and look at all the jpg files I have in the my pictures folder without having to carry out another search. If I then add a new picture called newpic1.jpg into the my picture folder and then open the collection that file will not be listed. This is because it will only list the files that were there at the time the search took place, not the files that are there now.
Now compare this to a virtual folder. If I run a search in vista for all *.jpg files in the my picture folder and save the results as a virtual folder, every time I open this folder it will list all the *.jpg files I have in that folder now, not at the time the original search was done.
It would be so much better if collections were dynamic. To give you another example, let's say I have a music collection that contains all my ripped music. If I rip a new song I have to manually add it to the collection, if it was dynamic it would just look after itself.
Would it be technically possible to use the windows virtual folder functionality and add it into opus? If would be great if collections could tap into virtual folders functionality and opus find could use the vista search functionally.
