I've never tried using DO for file backups, instead using a program called ViceVersa to do that. Now, as I'm migrating to Win10 I'm having problems with VV and wonder whether I can simply replace it with DO.
I backup "interactively", IOW not automatically. I simply run the program (VV) periodically, backing up files to a Network shared location.
What I'd like to do, if possible, is create a button in DO to do the same. It would basically mirror what's in several locations on my local drive to identical locations on another machine.
Where should I look in DO to do that? (if possible)
I presume that updating all sub-directories from a given parent (or automatically including new sub-directories) is a matter of adding switches?
And I suppose, after reading the 'synchronize' function, that's it's not possible to use that as some form of saved comparison, attached to a button? I like the behavior there that allows you to view the differences before execution.
Copying is always recursive by default. You have to go out of your way to make it not include sub-folders.
You could usr Synchronize by e.g. creating a layout with your two folders in each side and the sync panel open, so you normally just have to click Compare (assuming the other options weren't changed in between uses).
If you're synching a lot of files, and often, and you want a UI to inspect the differences before going ahead, you might want to look at tools like Beyond Compare (the one I happen to use; there are others). These are like the Sync panel but on steroids, since it's their entire purpose. They can be automated from Opus so you just click a button and the tool compares your two current folders, selected files, or fixed, predefined folders.
Thanks Leo, I'll check it out and continue studying how/if I can us DO for this. My particular application is not always THAT complicated, so I'm hopeful to be able to use DO directly.
