File Explorer crash extracting zips

Hi,
I have two zip files: test1-1.zip and test1-2.zip and these can be right clicked and extracted perfectly using Directory Opus (either by right clicking each separately or selecting both and then right clicking) to bring up the context menu and choosing 7zip. However, if I use Windows File Explorer instead, right clicking on either one individually works as expected, but selecting (not even right clicking) both files together causes Windows File Explorer to crash. Using NirSoft ShellExView I've found that if I disable the two Directory Opus Context Menu entries (Context Menu and Drag & Drop Handler) the files behave as expected in Windows File Explorer with no crashing. Now, I could just leave these two Opus Context Menu entries disabled as I can still see an 'Open In Directory Opus' option when right clicking with File Explorer, but not sure what else I might be missing or whether it is even a good thing to do?

Does it happen with all zip files or just those two?

If it's only those two, is it possible for us to have copies to test with?

It's also possible that disabling the two Opus entries is just moving things around in memory, such that a bug somewhere else isn't triggered anymore. It might be worth a try to re-enable them and disable some other archive-related entries to test if the Opus ones are really involved.

It is only those 2 files. In fact, as I continued testing, I've just seen that, as stated, the files extract correctly using the context menu within Opus but crash as I multi-select them in File Explorer (unless I remove the Opus context menus). I've just copied the files to a different folder on the same drive and no crash from Explorer (with the context menu enabled). I'm not sure now what this means... perhaps something bad with the SSD?

Hard to guess without being able to test the archives myself, but if it only crashes:

  • With 2 specific archives
  • On one specific drive
  • When 2 shell extensions are enabled

...and only when all three at once coincide, it's unclear which is the real problem and which things are just symptoms.

Yes, it's only crashing Explorer in the one specific folder with those specific 2 files selected and the extensions enabled. I've tried using a sub folder off the first in case it was a path length problem, but the files behave normally. I've never seen anything quite like this, so moving forward I'll just use a different folder and forget it ever happened

Many thanks for your help Leo
