Would it be possible to add file information to the status bar, like filename, last modified date etc? For images dimensions and colour depth. I am aware that for images it comes up in the Viewer but I'd quite like to be able to see that information when the viewer is off
FWIW, you can already display that information in file-display columns and infotips.
The status bar typically shows information about all the files, and/or all the selected files. Showing specific details of individual files seems better done via file display columns, so that you can see the details for more than one file at once (with the infotips covering things for modes which don't have columns, or columns/details that you don't want to see all the time).
Since working in thumbnail view-mode quite a bit for some time now, I could see the usefulnesses of something ~like~ this request... where the details view columns aren't otherwise available - and info tips isn't the right fit for keyboard-only spot checking of a current file selections info. And individual file info is not something that seems to fit so well in a status bar for anything other than just a few bits of info.
I'd rather see some granular level of control over what info is displayed in the metapane - which should show any and all of the kinds of info you want related to the selected file - but which by default displays ALOT of info that you may otherwise not want to be distracted by if you have a reason to be doing a manual visual inspection of some number of files for file info that may be of interest. I could then only turn on the metapane with a minimalist height along the bottom edge of the screen near the status bar for just the few bits of info I want to inspect... Personally, I'd also like some finer control over where the metapane can be 'docked'... such as vertically splitting the area of the screen taken up by the folder tree.
At any rate, not what you asked for but that's something "I" would use... would that be useful to you CybrHwk - in lieu of status bar file info if that request weren't fulfilled?
Yeah steje it would. The reason for asking for the fileinfo is that I use thumbnail mode quite a lot as well, particularly for managing my photos. I used to use ACDSee but it just got far to bloated, but Opus doesn't have the image information in the status bar like ACDSee had, which I found helpful. Having it in the viewer pane seems slightly disconnected from where you would expect file info to be.
If the metapane could be docked under the viewer that would be ideal (can that be done already?)
I would still argue that in thumbnail mode having the selected file info in the status bar would be very useful. Not by default necessarily, but via the { } feature
It's not really my department, but I think there are some ideas along these lines. I don't know when/if they'll be implemented or exactly what they'll end up being, though.
Here is how to make your own custom photo InfoTips for EXIF image data.
Info Tips... Create Custom EXIF Information for when Mouse Hovers Over Image…
Open Settings \ File Types.
Click the File Type Groups.
Double-click Images.
Select the Info Tip tab (at top).
Modify Info Tips as needed. NOTE: This is a simple text screen and you can add any descriptions you want; you can also add spaces, dots, dashes & etc. You can also move Items around to suite your liking.
Use the Insert Field button to add new items from any category; in this case you will use mainly items from the Pictures category but others are OK too.
Click on OK, click Close and you are done.
Hover the mouse over a digital image that you took with your own camera; all of the new Info Tips items will show up.
If an image does not include all of the items that you added to Info Tips they will simply not show up.
NOTE: Many (if not most) images that have been downloaded from the Internet will not show all Info Tips as they have often times been stripped off.
Thanks for the tute DocLotus. Got it working, but for some reason it doesn't work in details mode for me which is the mode i am in most of the time. i checked in preferences and enable infotips in all modes is enabled. i'm using Dopus 10.5.0
