Whenever I change a file with tags they just disappear? Is this a bug?
Which type of file?
What are you modifying it with?
The file contents. For example this happened with excel worksheet files
It seems okay for me with .xlsx files, when edited using Excel 2010, except that if the file is selected when I update it then the metapane in Opus shows all the attributes as clear. But if I then select another file, then go back to the .xslx file, then the tags etc. are all there again.
So it looks like Opus is maybe refreshing the selected file's tags etc. a little too early, or something (e.g. before Excel has finished writing the new version of the file), but the tags are still there.
Is that consistent with what you see, or do you see something else?
While we wait for feedback to Leo's observation and question - and while this may otherwise have no bearing to your issue - I've noticed that something about my corporate setup of Office 2007 on my work laptop that causes .DOCX file 'Document Properties' tag values to be overwritten (upon file change/save). And I mention it because some fields just get overwritten with new values... while others actually get 'cleared'.
I think different apps do different thing to save changes to a file - like actually create a new file rather than writing changes to the existing file - and I also "thought" that Opus tires to "watch out" for those kind of tricks being played by apps... though I'm not certain if Opus wil try to rewrite tag metadata to a 'new' file created with the same name as the old file by certain apps... but in the case of certain types of files (word docs in this case, maybe excel files too) it seems like the app making the change may actually have something configured to influence what happens to certain "tag" data... If you're NOT just seeing the same "post save refresh" thing Leo saw... I'd keep track of what specific metadata fields you're seeing this happen with - particularly with MS Office filetypes...
I changed a XLSX tagged file but the tags didn't change, I'll pay attention to this
I've also noticed a file attribute oddity on my Windows 7 Pro 64 bit machine when modifying Excel 2010 XLSX files. I can't remember the details right now but I did verify it in both Explorer and Opus so it wasn't an Opus thing. Seems like I had to either exit Excel or something like that before the attributes displayed as they should.
I just got back from vacation so my mind is a bit fuzzier than usual, but I'll see if I can't duplicate the situation.
For anyone weighing in on this - I'd say it's worth it to just include what tag/attr you're looking at... what interface you used to set it (opus command, metapane, properties dialog, somethign else), what you then did (modified in an app or not), and then click off and back on the file per Leo's observation... result?
