File size doesn't change when updating

I'm using DOpus 9.5.4.0.3806 on WinXP Pro SP3. Almost every day, I copy a number of files from my desktop computer to a flash drive. At some point (I don't remember when), I began to notice that when I replaced an older version of a file with a more recent version, the date on the flash drive would correctly indicate that the file was older, but the two files were said to have EXACTLY the same byte size, even though I had recently worked on the file on my desktop. The desktop file should have been larger, and certainly not exactly the same size. For example, tonight I copied a .doc file which I had saved on my hard drive after adding some information to it. When I went to copy it to my flash drive, Directory Opus reported both files as being 28.5 KB (29,184 bytes). I've noticed this repeatedly. I'm not sure whether it happens only with .doc files. Lately, those tend to be the files I've been working on most. Is there a problem with Directory Opus that results in the file size being incorrectly read?

make sure, you have the update set on "automatic" in your folder settings.

Does the same thing happen in Explorer? (If not, try looking at the folder in Explorer but copying the file with Opus; does it fail to show the updated size then?)

There is an option in Opus to disable detecting changes on network drives but that should not affect Flash drives, which should simply work unless the OS/filesystem is failing to tell Opus about the changes.

Also, make sure you're looking at the Size column and not the Size on Disk column. And that when you push F5 the size does change (i.e. the file isn't actually the same size as before; maybe it is? .doc files may contain padding, for example).

Thanks, abr and leo, for your quick responses. Abr, I'm not sure what you are referring to by "automatic" in my folder settings.

Leo, I took a look in Explorer, and to my surprise, two folders were shown to be exactly the same size even though I had added material to one of them and not the other. And yes, I was looking at size, not size on disk. I uploaded to Image Shack a small screenshot of my attempt to copy the file using DOpus so you can see what I'm talking about: http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/9941/dopusfilesize.gif. Since Explorer also showed the same file size, I guess this isn't a DOpus issue, but it is puzzling.

If you look under -> tools -> folder options -> options, you can set it. It has to be saved to be persistent. Sorry, it´s the german
settings page, but it´s in the same place in the english version.

Seems like those files actually are the same size then.

The option Abr mentions is about folder size calculation, FWIW. It won't affect the reported sizes of individual files.

A completely empty .doc file (with no text whatsoever) is about 24Kb, so it's reasonable to assume there's a certain amount of padding in the file format that means small changes to the content may not be reflected in the file size.

Yeah, sorry. This option, of course, doesn´t affect the date. I thought it was about sizes not updating immediately.

Thanks, Jon, for your response. I didn't know there was quite that much "extra," but even so, if I add a short paragraph, shouldn't the byte count change at least slightly?

Clearly, not necessarily

My subject heading was rather misleading. I realized that as soon as I posted the message and tried to change it, but I found that one can't edit one's posts in this section.
