if i dock a floating toolbar that is set to 'always on top' to the top edge of my screen, is there a way to get other windows to maximize to the edge of the toolbar? as it stands now, all windows maximize underneath the toolbar
This should happen automatically.
Sometimes Windows doesn't notice when new toolbars are docked and fails to resize the "workspace" area of the screen. (That is the area where the desktop icons appear and which maximized windows take up.) The problem happens with docked toolbars ("AppBars") from other programs as well and seems to be an old bug in Explorer. I can usually fix it by dragging the toolbar away from the screen edge so that it undocks, then dragging it back to re-dock it. (Sometimes just dragging it slightly but not enough to undock it, then letting go, makes Explorer resize the desktop/workspace, too.)
If you're using an alternative shell rather than Explorer then it may not properly support AppBars other than the TaskBar itself, which would be a it of an oversight by the makers of the shell.
it's an issue with my shell then. i'll take it up with them
thanks!
Example to show what I mean:
yes! that's exactly what i want! but it doesn't work like that on my machine...
luckily the shell i use is very actively developed so i'm whining about it on their forums right now
i just remembered that i can reserve any edge of the screen in my shell, so i can just pull the top down as far as it takes to make the toolbar visible and my windows will maximize right to that line...
problem solved
Maybe this tool would be useful.
That may reserve space in the same way that Opus does for its toolbars in which case it wouldn't work with the shell garbanzo is using either. It sounds like a similar feature is built into that shell anyway.
thanks Xyzzy, but leo is right, a similar feature is already built into the shell. i was using it too, to make room at the bottom for samurize and my tasks and tray - i had just forgotten about it. anyway i make some room at the top of my screen for my menu and it works fine.
i'm finding it's really nice to have a global menu, especially one that doesn't get automatically populated with entries whenever you install something! plus it provides
yet another reason why DOpus is the king of all file managers
