I am very happy with v12.33 and have not upgraded. I was thinking that I should just to be current with any security updates. My concern is that I would like the look of Opus to remain essentially the same after the upgrade and then I might try some of the changes with time. I don't want to have to spend a bunch of time getting adjusted to the new program.
Can I select a setting that basically keeps things pretty much the same?
Do I need to upgrade to 13 to keep pace with any security issues?
Opus 13 is indeed needed for any updates including security issues (unless something is so bad that the devs deem prior versions require an update too, but that would be extremely rare).
Going from 12 to 13 is pretty easy. In a few rare instances, some settings have moved and will need to be enabled/disabled again, but most of it will work and look the exact same.
No. Has Opus ever had any security issues? File managers are rarely involved with anything that might raise security concerns. You need to upgrade because you'll love the new features
Yes I had looked at the tips before and they were so plentiful that I decided to stop. Opus does everything I need at this point; there may be some new features I would eventually find useful and I have no objection paying for 13 and contributing to the cause, but I just don't have the time to get into a project. Reading what IXP has to say it sounds like there are no real security concerns staying with 12.33 for now.
I will be replacing my PC this summer and moving from win10 to win11, so it sounds like it will be safe to wait till then. If so can I take my win10/OPUS12.33 backup to the new machine? What would be the best way to install 13 on that new machine and keep all my settings for starters? Should I install 12.33, copy in my backup and then upgrade? Or should I just install 13 and copy in my 12.33 backup?
when i installed v13 i did a restore of my v12. it was so effective that i had to hunt down v13s new features in the toolbars menus, manually and copy them over to make sure it was all there.
and even that was easy from the new customize window slider that shows what features were added for each version.
the performance and integration of everything of v13 is well worth it! even if you dont use any other new features.
just my opinion, of course, im also a believer of "if it aint broken dont fix it", i didnt think the dev could make v12 better.... but they did.
Thank you everyone for the quick and helpful replies. That is one of the things I like so much about Opus - a fabulous program, great support, and a great user community.
Leo,
I was going to wait till later this summer when I get a new PC to purchase 13 but I see now that I have to purchase it by end of June to get 2 yrs of free updates? It seems like I have had 12 for a long time and I didn't realize that support ran out. Just curious. You guys do such good work that I am happy to support you but just wondering.
I guess I will go ahead and buy 13 but may not have time to try it till July.
Please tell me a little about your Everything indexed search tool. I currently use Copernic Desktop search and find it a great tool. Sometimes I use Opus instead but have generally found Copernic provides a better formatted results page. Is your new indexer substantially different than in 12?
You'll get 1 year of free updates if you upgrade later, so it's definitely worth doing before that runs out, if you intend to soon anyway.
Everything isn't something we made; it's just something Opus can use, similar to how Opus can also use Windows Search. It's a very popular tool. You can see some basic demonstrations of using it within Opus in the Opus 13 highlights video.
