How do I add content to a Comment field?

I can add content to a Description field but it only appends my content/comment to the existing description content. This is no use to me.

I have managed to create a Comments column in DO (right-click in column's names bar, in sub-menu: Columns, Other, Comments). Unfortunately this Comments column has disappeared after I exit DO and load it again. Ok so I have only used MS Windows Explorer, then PowerDesk before (compare with PowerDesk's 'Note' column).

How can I add my personalized comment in its own field to a selected folder's or file's row?

[Single admin user, Windows 7 Professional, trialling DO in Explorer mode ( I think!) at present. Over many years starting with Unix I have developed my own file structure and never knowingly put anything into Libraries or My Documents, etc.]

I use a hotkey (Ctrl-P) to add a description. Not sure if it is one of the default hotkeys. If not it is easy enough to set up. Here is the key setting and a couple of screen grabs showing how it works.

If the file type is an image, then the image dimensions will also display as part of the description, and as far as I know there's not a way to change that at the moment.

The description column not sticking when you exit and restart Opus probably means you're not saving the lister configuration. Check the tutorials, FAQ or help on setting up your default lister.

What kind of files are they? (e.g. PDF, JPG, etc.)

What type of drive are they stored on? (e.g. Local NTFS partition, Windows NTFS network drive, Linux/Samba network drive, etc.)

Where & how the comments get stored depends on the file type, and sometimes also the type of device since types that don't have their own way to store comments (or which have their own way, but Opus doesn't know about it) will have their comments stored as NTFS metadata instead.

(Also, if anything else is modifying the files it could be removing the metadata by accident.)

aussieboykie,

Problem is, if I include a description column the I386... stuff is displayed for every file and my comments added with Ctrl-P are obscured. The snip shows my Comments column but I cannot find out how to add content to it.

Another point: how do I access that Command Editor dialog which you display in your reply?

Settings -> Customize Toolbars then Keys tab.
