How to update USB (portable) DOpus to latest version?

I know how to export a normal DOpus installtion to a USB using the export feature.

However, let's say the only installation I have is the USB one. And I've tweaked all the settings just like I prefer. So no other computer has all the settings like that, only the USB does. How can I update the USB installation to the latest version without losing those settings?

Won´t the import/export function work?

No. You have to consider the situation:
First, there is no "import/export" function. There's a 'backup & Restore" option, and this is where the USB export feature is located. However, in portable mode, this option is greyed out (disabled).

Second, remember, I don't have a "base" installation anywhere, meaning a normal, non-portable installation. This is what I used initially to create the portable files on the USB. But now that I have the portable files, I've changed the settings, etc. and these are all stored on the portable drive. Furthermore, I have uninstalled the base installation on the computer. So all that is left is the portable installation.

So, how do I update the portable files to the latest version? I can't do a backup/restore, because there's nowhere to do it from. And I can't install the DOpus installer on the portable drive. So how?

You have to have Opus installed on something normally to do a USB export.

When you do the export it should ask you if you want to overwrite or keep the configuration on the USB drive. (As far as I can remember. Might be worth backing up the DOPUS folder on the USB drive the first time you do it, in case my memory is wrong. If the config does get overwritten you can just copy the files back.)

Ok, i see. Did you try to save & restore your config files in the \Dopus\configfile folder (*.oxc)?

OK, thanks. That's what I figured. I hope they change it so we can update the USB directly in the future.

How do I update Opus portable to latest version (10.1 ??). Last time I tried (with Opus regular updated), there was no provision to update the portable version- no export.... Your forum answer does not answer the question. Thanks

To update your exported copy, just export another copy of the top of it from your main HDD install. (After updating the HDD install, of course.)

If an existing copy is found on the USB stick then you'll be prompted about replacing just the program files, without re-exporting your configuration, or replacing both the program files and the configuration on the USB stick.

Very strange. The option to export Opus portable to USB should be in Settings > Backup and Restore... (in regular Opus). There you should find option to export portable Opus to USB.

The question is not how to simply export to a USB. That's easy.

The question is how to update a portable installation of DOpus without losing the tweaked settings. If you do an export from a desktop DOpus install, it will overwrite whatever changes made to the portable DOpus settings if they are different from the desktop. And (for me at least) my portable settings are different from the desktop settings.

The only way to do it is to save the settings of the portable before overwriting it with the updated DOpus version from the desktop. But that's a little klunky and annoying.

No that's not correct, as Leo said - if you attempt to export Opus over the top of an existing export you will be given the option to update the program files without modifying the configuration.

Ah! I was always afraid of losing everything.

What I should really for, as in a feature request, is a way to update the portable version without the importing and exporting. Can we build it into an "Update" function, similar to how the desktop can now upgrade with that new update dialog?

If I attempt to export to a USB Stick from the backup-restore feature... it tells me I can't do it without a license and I wind-up at Opus Web site and giving me instructions on buying another license... Thanks

I've checked our records and you do have a USB licence already - make sure you're using your correct purchased certificate. You can get it from the Lost Registration Code page if you can't find it.

I never get a chance to enter the certificate ( which would be the USB certificate and not the Opus Main...??). In any event there is no opportunity to enter either. Thanks

There is only one certificate, which you set on your HDD install via the Licence Manager in the Help menu (top-right of the default toolbars).

When you look in there, it will tell you which type of certificate you have installed and how many (if any) USB exports you are allowed to make with it.

If it says you are using a Stock or Evaluation certificate then that means you have not installed your certificate at all (and the one you are currently using is temporary and will expire at some point in the future). You can get your certificate via the link Jon provided above, and install it via the same window.

If it says you are using a Normal certificate, but also says USB Flash Drive Export is disabled, then try downloading your certificate again (via Jon's link) and installing that. Maybe you are using an older one from before you added the USB licence?

Downloaded certificate and installed. All went as you say/said. Thanks.. Updated to 10.1....
