You know the selection rectangle you make using the middle-mouse-button, that can then be used to crop?
I wish I could also use the rectangle to "zoom to selection".
You can crop and then undo (restore/un-crop). (Combined with Grow-to-Page mode to make the result fill the screen.) The crop won't affect the file unless you explicitly save the image afterwards.
