Joined new network, can I get my settings back

Hello All,

I had a problem with my server so had to reinstall which of course meant joining the server (from my PC) as a new user which means DOPUS thinks I'm someone new.

What I would like to know is, are my settings( toolbars, fonts, preferences) stored anywhere that I can access and reload again.

FWIW, it wasn't until after this all happened that I saw the "Export/Import settings option" :frowning:

Thanks for any and all help

They will be in your old user's profile.

If you type /dopusdata into the Opus address bar it will take you to where your new user's configuration files are. Hopefully that will make it easy to find where your old user's files are.

Thanks for the quick reponse

Being a bit dim here but where is the Opus Address Bar :frowning: I searched the help file but couldn't find reference to it (FWIW, I have Dopus 9)

The address bar is the big text field with the current directory path in it.

Perhaps "path bar" would be a better word for it. I was using a term from web browsers.

Ah, on my screen its on the bottom called "Location". Okay I have found where the "data" but abit confused. (I hate MSFT for the user stuff, I've already spent 3 hours this AM and only got 2 programs back the way they were)

Anyway, it took me to Docs&Setting\All User\GPSoftware etc... and then a load of folder like \Buttons,\Collections etc.. Now my assumtion would have been if this information is stored under \All Users then it would load up like I had it for me old network user.

Is it possible I have lost my settings, of which I remember spending alot of time getting just how I liked :frowning:

I'm not sure how the All Users profile works when it comes to network domains.

If could be that your previous Opus installation was in the private configuration mode, in which case the settings will be under instead of All Users, assuming the old user had previously logged on to the machine you are on now.

If you're still stuck after Nudel's advice (it sounds like you're not really familiar or at least even 'happy' with basic Windows multi-user folder design) then just search for some of the Opus related folders you've now seen under your 'new' install of those alias paths nudel mentioned (the contents of your current /dopusdata and /dopusglobaldata paths). Search under ~other~ folders located directly under the C:\Documents and Settings folder.

This isn't really an 'Opus' issue... but since Opus sticks all of it's config in 'files' now instead of registry settings, getting back your old config should be pretty easy once you find these old config folders and files... give a shout when you do, but basically you'll mostly just be copying from the old locations to the new locations and rebooting.

It's funny that recently issues like this have come up sort of often where older users are informing newer users of the goodness of Opus built in Backup & Restore option under the Settings menu... It's actually one of the first capabilities I look for in almost ANY app since I usually like to tweak every program I use as much as I can to my likings... and often restore stable backup images every so often and want to easily recover and application config changes I've made since my last image backup...

Hello Steje,

Thanks for the response

(it sounds like you're not really familiar or at least even
'happy' with basic Windows multi-user folder design)

Never been happy with it basically because since Windows 95 I have spent many hours (days) resetting up apps because I had to change "users" of the PC, for multiple reason. Why can't Windows (not individual apps) ask me whether I am the same person or not or whether I want/NEED a completely fresh desktop etc.... Anyway, sorry for rambling, pet peeve.

I found my original Directory Opus stuff under my old user. I figured I would be "smart" and just copy those files over the files. First time didn't work but then realised I was doing it inside DO (duh). 2nd time took.

Follow-up question if I may: Is it possible to tell DO to use the All Users folder so in theory I won't have to go through this again?

Thanks!

Hi... I'm on a blackberry at the moment, and laptop juice is all gone. Though when you install Opus it asks you (like most apps) if you want to install in single or multi user mode... There just so happens to be an option to change it after the fact.

Can't remember exactly where it is and can't look at it right now, but try going to 'Settings-Preferences' and try just typing the word USER in the search field at the bottom of the Preferences window... It will search all 'Preferences' for option descriptions related to user. I think the option is called something like "change user mode next time opus restarts" or something like that, and it shows you what the current setting is - like "per-user" or "all-users" or some such verbiage...

The option Steje mentions is under Prefs -> Miscellaneous -> Options.
