Large Icons mode - how to change icon sizes RESOLVED

This fix is for vista ....

Hey all. Been using DOPUS for a while and i love it so much - best thing since sliced bread. There were some things i wanted to improve tough. One of them was the fact that the largest icons are 32 pix in the large icons mode - however windows vista has such lovely large icons that go up to 256 pix so naturally i wanted to improve that ...

Now there is no way how to change the large icons mode in Dopus but when browsing my computer i noticed that the desktop and my computer icons are very different from the rest. Because Dopus extracts it's icons straight from windows, i figured that it is not Dopus that controls this but windows ... I also knew that the default shell icons in Vista are 32 pix.... So to the point - i thought that there has to be a switch that controls the size of icons in windows registry .....

after some searching i found this :

go to registry entry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

there is a switch called Shell Icon Size - it should be 32 or 48 but you can edit that to whatever size you want (i don't know if non-standard sizes would work, but i tried 64, 96 and 128 pix and it was working fine .... )

remember - tinkering with your registry is not for beginners so carry this one out on your own risk .... and i am not responsible for anything you do to your computer .... cheers

P.S. if you have dopus running when you carry out the changes, you should exit dopus and launch it again .... so it can build the icon cache form windows....

also things like live folders don't work and you can't extract thumbnails from images, you can do that in thumbnails or in tiles mode however...

let me know if this works for you too....

sorry if this has already been posted ...

hey just found a doownside of this - no thumbnail extraction for any images or icons - unfortunately ... .:frowning:

maybe somebody can find a workaround for this :frowning:

just an update - the maximum pixels you can set your icons to is 48 x48 ... any other resolution will end up with no picture previews in icons mode.

It also won't display icons for shortcuts and other .exe files ....

i'm actually very interested in this, but unfortunately this is not really what i wanted, i don't use dopus completely, meaning i still use windows explorer in some occasions, and this trick changes the icons everywhere which is something i don't want

as far as i could understand the reason dopus doesn't have 48x48 (or bigger) icons is because dopus "asks" windows for them, and windows has them capped at 32, what i don't understand is why windows is able to get the 48x48 icons while in tiles view, if dopus can "ask" windows for the 32 icons why can't it ask for the 48 icons in the same way windows does for tiles mode?

anyway, thx for this fix

In Windows Vista/Seven Dopus uses 256x256 RGBA PNG format for ALL view modes.
All other formats in ICO file are ignored (same as Windows Explorer does).

I attached a ICO file with 256x256 RGBA PNG format only inside. All other formats (48x48, 32x32, etc. are removed).

If you view this in Dopus, you can see it uses that format only.

Dopus has a 48x48 limit maximum size for icons (except for images in Thumbnails Mode).
