I tried the trial version of Dopus and love it ...
Now my main use would be from a USB stick or a USB harddisk.
So how do I proceed? Buy the Au $85,- license and I'm good to go?
Second question is that if I buy a 2 license pack, does the second license need to be in my name? (my gf wants to use it too)
Thanks for answering these questions - and I apologize if it could be found on the forum. I did search for a while now and couldn't find a clear statement on this anywhere
To use the USB export feature you need to also purchase the optional USB export licence which is an extra $10. Yes a dual-install licence would cover your girlfriend (technically the multiple install licences only cover the one site, but I don't want to enquire too closely into your domestic arrangements and so will give you the benefit of the doubt )
I've looked for an answer in the FAQs and searched the site, but still can't find an answer to the following question:
If I puchase an export license, and have exported DO to my USB flash drive, if my flash drive is not connected to my PC, will DO still function normally on my PC, or do I need to "un-export" DO from the USB flash drive? In other words, does the license manager prevent my main PC (the one on which DO was originally installed) from running DO if DO has been exported to the USB?
"Program License
Directory Opus 9 is supplied under the following conditions, is valid for the original purchaser only and is not transferable. You accept responsibility for any and all Directory Opus Program Certificates issued by GP Software to you.
The SOFTWARE may only be installed on the number of machines specified by the program license and associated certificate. Additionally, you may install the SOFTWARE on ONE personal laptop, irrespective of the number of installs allowed by your license. For example, this means that if you have purchased a two install license you may install the SOFTWARE on two computers of ANY type PLUS ONE personal laptop.
The standard license is a single-installation license which allows the installation of the SOFTWARE on one physical machine only, for exclusive on that machine only, plus one personal laptop. Installation on more than one machine (not including one personal laptop) requires a license to be purchased for each extra machine."
Given the instructions above, do both the main PC and laptop use the same license certificate (does one certificate allow for installation on both the main PC and the laptop)?
The certificate you receive when you purchase Opus specifies the number of installs you are entitled to. The same certificate file is used for each install. Additionally, you are entitled to install on one personal (that is, owned and used by you) laptop. You are also entitled to install and use Opus from one USB key for each USB licence you have purchased.
So, eg, if you purchase a single install licence ($85 *) plus one USB licence ($10 *) for a total of $95 *, you can install and use Opus on:
Your main computer
A laptop
a USB key (which can be then used on any computer at any time)
Also, "exporting" Opus to a USB key does not MOVE Opus or affect the ability of Opus to run on the PC you had installed it on and exported to USB from...
The USB export of Opus is a "copy" of Opus that allows you to conveniently run Opus on other computers without INSTALLING it on those computers... it's an idea that has become quite popular over the last few years (look around for explanations of U3 and PortableApps)...
For instance, I have several customer sites I work from at different times where I most certainly cannot "install" Opus on any of the computers I might gain access to whlie I'm there... but the USB key let's me use Opus anyway, because no modification are made to the actual computers registry, etc etc.
Jon and Steje, thank you both very much for the rapid response to my questions. Looks like DO will do exactly what I want it to do. Your answers have helped me decide to purchase DO.
If I were, at some time in the future, to upgrade (replace) my main computer, is it possible and/or acceptable to run Dopus on both the old and new computers during the transition period of setting up the new to replace the old?
