am having a problem uploading files using opus that i have not had before. i can see the files being uploaded one by one, but when the upload is complete, and i do a refresh, the files i just uploaded do not show up. I have about 4500 files in one directory on my webiste server.
I contacted my host and they said i should change ftp software. Would really hate to do that as opus is really easy to work with.
here is what my host said:
'Linux servers do not have a concept of hidden files; any non-displaying files would be an issue in the client FTP software. The web interface is written in PHP and likely has difficulty with the huge number of files in that directory; some FTP software has the same issue so you may want to try different software, such as SmartFTP which we've used to move sites before when they have large numbers of files in one directory.
I'd be surprised if it is the number of files by itself. I have used Opus FTP to connect to Unix hosts with directories containing around 300,000 files (no exaggeration). It took a long time for the file list to come back, and I had to increase some timeout settings to avoid disconnection because it took such a long time for the server at the other side to actually start sending the list of filenames, but it did work.
It's worth trying a couple of other FTP programs anyway, just to see if their theory is true. If the same problem happens in those programs then you can go back to them and say so. If it does seem that some programs show all the files but Opus doesn't then we can look at what the two programs do differently. They may be requesting a file list using different commands, for example. (Opus lets you override the list command if you need to.)
If you want to see more of what's going on with Opus's FTP connection, edit the bookmark for the site and on the Display tab make sure Enable log and Enable debug are both on. You can then open the Output Window (via the Tools menu in a lister) and switch to the FTP tab to see which commands are being sent to the server and what comes back.
Also keep in mind that Opus itself may be filtering out some of the files if you have it configured to do so. If it is you will see something like (2 hidden) in the status bar. (Assuming you have not edited your status bar.)
