Is there any way that check-box mode can be turned on within a lister view by default?
It is an option I would like to have on by default rather than having to turn it on every time I open a drive (or navigate around a drive structure).

I don't think there is.
If you just want the 'toggle select' aspect of it, note that you can use the middle mouse button (if you your middle button isn't mapped to some other function via your mouse-driver configuration) to toggle-select, or if you use Power Mode you can configure the left mouse button to do the same.
