I recently installed Do on my new laptop and imported the *.dps settings file from my old computer using the Settings/Import and Export function.
This seemed to have worked but whenever I try to open or execute a file in the lister, I get the error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
I can only open *.doc files but nothing else. If I copy and paste a file to my desktop I can open it.
Assuming you are double-clicking the files, check in Settings -> File Types for the appropriate file type's Actions and Events. Check that the paths to the programs run by any of the defined actions/events are still valid on your new computer.
I checked the file associations in File/Settings and they were fine. I have taken the following actions, none of which seem to work:
Uninstalled DO
Run Registry Cleaner
reboot
Download latest version
Install DO
Run DO but problem persists
Install cetifcate; certificate accepted; problem persists.
I also notice that some of the buttoms on the top bar do not work for example, HELP/HELP does not work. HELP/DO MANUAL does not work.
HELP/GP SOFTWARE ONTHE WEB also does not work but HELP/KEYBOARD MAP does work as does HELP/LICENCE MANAGER.
It sounds to me as if your Registry Cleaner has screwed up something in your registry (they often do).
"Help / GPSoftware on the Web" simply opens a website via the system http:// handler - if this isn't working it indicates this association has been removed from the registry.
We have found that registry cleaners generally cause more problems then they solve, and we don't advise using them...
If you do Start, Run, then paste the URL to this page (e.g. [Moved to new computer but can't open files)) and hit return, does it successfully launch a new web browser for the page?
Thank you for all your help and patience. I was aware of Zone Aarm issues and I thought I had given ZA all the proper permissions, intentionally so, but apparently that was not the case; I had given inadequate permissions.
This was somewhat unusal because normally ZA will not even let an application launch without sending out warning signals but that did not happen in the case of DO. The program launched and "appeared' to run albeit at less than full capability.
Everything is fine now although I AM STILL LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DAY WHEN WE WILL HAVE A 7-ZIP PLUGIN.
I hate Zone Alarm so much. That it breaks other things and doesn't even tell you it's breaking them so you know why there's a problem is downright outrageous.
