MTS files in viewer

Given the prevalence of Sony digicams out "there", I'm quite surprised that the only archived reference to MTS files dates back to January last year - which would imply that viewing MTS in a DOpus viewer pane is in fact not a big deal at all in the wider DOpus community! I was hoping there might be a fix in 10, but not so.

W7 x64 SP1. I've got FFDShow and several other codecs installed, mts tacked on to the viewer filetype list etc., but still no go. Is this because MTS is a proprietary Panasonic/Sony format, perhaps? (Although there is no problem with Media Player, as noted in the other thread on this topic.)

If anyone has a working solution, please do tell! As I have a Panasonic camera I use a lot for videos and dedicated Sony handycam I have several miles of mts footage I want to wade through and using WMP is proving an absolute pain.

Cheers!
Robin

Go to Preferences / Viewer / Plugins configure the Movie plugin and add .mts to its list of extensions. Does that make it work?

Hi Leo - no,it doesn't, as mentioned in my question. :frowning: Unless I have done it wrong ...

Have you installed the 64-bit version of FFDShow (and any video demuxers/splitters if you had to install them to make it MTS work in WMP)?

On 64-bit Windows, by default the 32-bit version of Windows Media Player is used but Opus is a 64-bit process. So to make things work in both you have to install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the video codecs.

Thanks, Leo. I did already have ffdshow x64 installed, but your post prompted me to go after the latest version, and reading the list of supported formats, mts was not one of them as far as I could see. I installed it anyway, but no go. I then checked out KLite x64, which does support mts as a non-default option. KLite uninstalled ffdshow and it found and removed innumerable codec related errors in my registry during the installation process - no doubt the dregs of bad uninstallations of various software over the years. Anyway, the upshot is that with mts checked in the KLite Options, the format now plays fine in the DOpus viewer so thanks for forcing me to address the issue of codecs more fully.

Perhaps of interest to anyone reading this post is that Sony (specifically) HD mts files played in the DOpus and other viewers, such as my encoding software, is pretty bad - full of "interlacey" horizontal lines. (These lines are not present when viewing original mts in WMV.) I don't know if that's fixable. Long term it doesn't really matter a great deal (to me) as the Sony Digicam is a loaner and the huge list of files I am working on are a friend's - the preview quality is perfectly good enough to enable me to weed through them in DOpus. When I use my default software (Aimersoft Ultimate) to convert from mts to whatever, the lines are present in the converted file no matter what parameters I set - high res, hig quality etc. By contrast, the HD mts movies taken with my Panasonic FZ100 camera are perfect in all regards, and that's my own default video camera. Hope this is somewhat helpful to someone, somewhere.

Hoods, after 2 days of non-stoping testing  i've finished my post. You might find some help or inspiration in it:

After installing a codec pack on a clean Windows, *.MTS is supported by the Movie Viewer Plugin. No need for ActiveX or Preview Handlers.

Thanks, Plunder - useful stuff indeed and I have filed it away for future reference. At present what I've done works as well as I need it to - now if I can just get rid of the Sony mts stripes (not in DOpus) so I can convert my mate's files for him without them looking so bad I'll be happy. Off to another forum!

Further to this thread: I tried a variety of video coders today and found that Aunsoft Video Coder deinterlaces the Sony mts files beautifully, so I bought it (it's pretty cheap) and so far am impressed with it. Anyway, my friend will now have lovely merged and artefact free AVI from his fishing holiday! (They also have a specific MTS converter but the full package is only $6 more.)
