Network movie (mp4/m4v) black thumbails

On the networked box (only) the thumbnails are black. Sprockets are showing (turn off movie plugin thumbnail creation and it creates them normally in Windows).

Not sure if this is a bug exactly, but hoping someone else can reproduce it if it is -

2 Computers, both almost identical setups, Main is a Win7 x64 box, Media is a Win7 x86 mac mini. Files are on a local drive on Main, all in *.m4v (mp4 video format, tried both extensions), encoded in Handbrake - no problems playing anywhere or on anything. On Media it is a mapped network drive. Both are using the same drive letter (folder tree is basically an iTunes library).

Both are running DOpus 10.0.0.6 (had DOpus 9 on the Media box initially, same black thumbnails). All video codecs / splitters are installed correctly. The files are being identified correctly, both Haali media splitter and ffdshow are running on the files (task bar icons appearing etc). "Skip Over Initial Black Frames" is turned on.

Playing in the Viewer Pane works perfectly - no delays or black frames.

Note that this only happens for the m4v files - avi files on the same drive get normal thumbnails...

Try increasing the "maximum time per thumbnail" setting in the Movie plugin. That'll make it spend longer searching for a non-black frame.

Tried increasing to 10 seconds - no difference, then up to 60 seconds, and again, still black thumbs. It does take that extra time to try and find a non-black frame, but still returning a black one. Leaving the threshold on 95 (as that's the default)... When selecting a file the Preview Pane starts playing in under 2 seconds.

Forgot to say - although some of these files have black frames as the beginning, some have no black frames at all...

Thumb-nailing appears to have gotten worst in v10. I personally hate the central store for thumbs. It makes it impossible to move the thumbs with the folder that they are in. Also helps to delete the thumbs when the folder is deleted.

It's no different to how it used to work.

Done some more testing...

Apparently when you install Haali Media Splitter & ffdshow only this happens - something wrong with the thumbnail generation that's not wrong with the preview pane...

On the other hand, install the K-Lite Codec Pack (which uses those, along with Gerbest iirc), have all the options set the same, and it works properly...

At a guess, the thumbnail generation is looking for some registry setting that's set with k-lite (and not normally, I had set the perceived-type to video already). Now it's working I don't really want to uninstall k-lite etc.

Just as an aside note - mp4 files can have a cover image set - that would be a preferable thumbnail image to use rather than a frame from within it (via an option for those who think otherwise) - they're also missing the ability to read the Duration property for Tiles view etc.
