New file behavior "blocked file"

I am sorry to say this one snuck up on me so I don't have a lot of lead-up info.

Yesterday, 2 new behaviors appeared;

  1. Firefox download bar USED to let me double click a .zip file label and it would come up in D9 as a folder. Now, no go. Just flickers the text on the label a little.

  2. One of my favorite strengths of D9 was to put it in 'filmstrip' mode when in my Downloads mixed files folder and looking at the pix on folders in .zips, find what I wanted and drag it from the right pane to where ever. Now it won't let me drag the zipped files at all unless I switch back to Explorer mode. Just refuses to "pick the file up" for dragging.

One must ALWAYS assume that they may have done something that had 'unintended consequences" but I am scratching my head.

Did a search in help and here but can't get a hint.
I am sure you all have never seen this plea before... but HELP!

TIA

  1. If you turn off Explorer Replacement in Opus (Settings -> Preferences -> Launching Opus), does the Firefox download bar then successfully open things in Explorer? If it's still broken then then something other than Opus must've gone wrong.

  2. Does the same problem happen if you switch from a standard view to Thumbnails mode? If so my bet would be that something is preventing generation of the drag image for thumbnails (as that's the only difference I can think of between dragging from thumbnails and dragging from details mode). If you haven't already, try rebooting in case it's something like the OS running out of graphics resources.

Thanks Leo.

Decoupling Opus produces no change in Firefox. That does sound like a seperate problem. Probably a coincidence.

Thumbnails act the same in Opus. I have a new clue on this one. when I look at 'properties' on the zips I am working on, I see a check box I have never seen before. It say. 'unblock'. Has a statement about protecting compputer from files from another computer. I am using vista and when I googled this new property, I got suggestions to change Group Policies.

Sounds pretty esoteric to me. I will do some more research tonight. Ran Kaspersky all night and it says I am clean of virus.

Check back later.

Great minds.....

I found this last night and did the Group Security change.....no better.

I guess I can try the Stream block but that sounds like a "if your arm hurts when you lift it....don't lift it" kind of fix. What I am really interested in is why this has just started on it's own. Grrrrrrrrrrr!

Probably not an Opus problem so I will shut up now.

Help from from people we don't know is what renews what little faith is left in the World.......THANK YOU.

The "from the internet" (aka "blocked") flag on the file will be set by whatever downloaded it, or possibly (less likely) by firewall/antivirus software.

I don't think Opus every sets or checks for that flag; Opus is oblivious to it, AFAIK. But if you double-click something in Opus (or somewhere else) it'll usually be sent to the Windows ShellExecute API, which I think checks for the flag and will display a warning. Other programs may interpret the flag and block opening files or display a warning for files that are flagged.

Well, 'streams -s -d *.zip from DOS cleared it right up. I guess that leaves 2 questions, one for me and for GPsoftware.

  1. ME - Why is this security stream suddenly being added to my downloads?

  2. Opus folks - Why is Opus sensitive to this in the way described above?

thanks again, Leo!

Did unblocking the file fix the drag & drop problem or something?

The problem with opening the zip file is unlikely to be something Opus is/isn't doing.
