When I go custom to try and delete some of the unneeded types I can only see this command:
"FileType NEWMENU"

Is there a way to eliminate the unnecessary types?

The "New" menu comes from Windows.

While you can edit it via the registry or various "tweak" tools, you'll always be at the mercy of programs you install adding more unwanted junk into it.

A better solution is to simply remove it from Opus (by removing the "FileType NEWMENU" item you found), and then create your own menu that only has the things you want in it. See here.
