Is it possible to use file collections as a cataloging system for archived files? I would like to have a searchable archive of removable media.
Each CD or DVD or external HD would have it's own collection file. This would be more useful if file names could be searched across collections.
Collections probably wouldn't do a good job for that. Opus will remove items from collections if they no longer exist, and also try to read information on files in collections (which would spin up whatever disc is in your DVD drive). They're not well suited to cataloguing removable media.
Thanks for the answer. I'll look for another program then to solve this problem.
I forgot to say, you could create folders full of shortcuts to all the files on the different CDs for almost the same effect. I think Opus should be able to create the shortcuts as a batch, and they could then be searched like a collection.
The drawback with that would be lots of small files on your HDD, though, which you might want to avoid.
