Office 2016

Since installing the updated Windows 2016 yesterday, I have been unable to view any Word files, even those created years ago, in the Viewer pane

Does File Explorer's viewer pane work for the same files?

(Are you really using Opus 6 as per your profile?)

No problem here.

Yes, File Explorer correctly shows the files in the Viewer mode

Which version of Opus are you using?

I can confirm that Word Documents do not preview in Windows 10 File Explorer or in DO 11.16 64bit. I have confirmed this on 3 different computers. The problem came to my notice after build 10547 and Office 16 became official.

As I considered this a Microsoft problem I contact their support channels and after many hours the problem is either related to the user profile or to OneDrive. However they have not found a solution and it has been progressed to Level 3 Support. I really don't expect a solution through Microsoft support but would not be surprised if it addressed through a patch for Office or in the next Windows 10 Preview release.

I also had the problem in FileCenter (a program I use to organise and name my client records). They fixed the problem by installing ORACLE viewers and making it the default. This turned out to be super fast on all my files. Selecting a different viewer in DOPUS will probably help as well.

Oracle viewers are industry standard and come with other software. QuickView Plus, for example. So this might be an option for some people.

Maybe Sasa also has these viewers from some source.

No, no viewers installed here. AFAIK Word uses a new format, but that shouldn't affect older docx. I didn't test a new docx.

Just tried the newest build out today, and still now view of Office files, although they can be viewed in FM. Is there any solution?

Which version of Opus are you using?

I also upgraded to Office 2016 and I'm not having any problems with the Viewer pane. My Word documents--old and new--are displaying fine.

I'm running DOpus 11.16 x64 and Windows 10.

Same here. Everything is working just fine. DOPUS 11.16 x64, Windows 10 updated and Office 2016 updated as well (365 subscription).

+1

Seems like it's working OK for people running Opus 11.

The OP's profile says they are using Opus 6, which was written fourteen years ago, before Preview Handlers existed.

Preview Handlers are the modern way to view Word files, and should work in modern versions of Opus, as long as the appropriate handler is installed and working (which you can check using Explorer). Opus 6 could not use them, though. (Opus 6 also doesn't properly support 64-bit or Unicode, it's that old.)

rtilewick: You've not replied to my two questions asking to confirm which Opus version you are using but, if it is really Opus 6, you would need to update to a newer version to be able to use the Office 2016 viewers. The Office 2016 viewers use APIs that did not exist when Opus 6 was written.

I am using the most recent download available, DO 11.16. Is there any more direct method of support? This is a pretty fundamental problem, and FWIW Quick View Plus (and FM) also has no trouble reading any Word files.

Thanks

Please go to Preferences / Viewer / Viewer Plugins, then select ActiveX + Preview + Office + Web and click Configure.

In the top section, Preview Handlers:

[ul][li]Is there a Word, Microsoft Word, or similar preview handler listed? (If so, which file extensions are listed next to it?)

[/li]
[li]Is there a Quick View Plus preview handler listed as well, or instead? (Which file extensions does it have?)[/li][/ul]

(Ignore the single-line Microsoft Office section lower down the list. That's a legacy thing now. The Preview Handlers section is the important part.)

While you are there, try clicking the Defaults button in the bottom-left, to remove any overrides that may have been set via the plugin. That should then get you the same results as you see in File Explorer's viewer pane.

I tried that, also set all "Office" handlers to their default, and the problem remains. There was no specific Word handler listed, just the omnibus Office handler. Would it make sense to uninstall D.O., and then reinstall it? Would there be licensing problems if I did? I must add though, the same basic problem exists on both, quite different, PCs on which DO is installed, an HP desktop, and a Lenovo Carbon X1. It really does seem to suggest a problem with D.O., and not a particular configuration.

Please help. I've been a long-time and loyal customer, and I don't seem to be getting the support any user would deserve.

Update: I tried uninstalling it, and reinstalling it, to no avail -- same problem

Uninstall/reinstall won't affect licensing, no need to worry there.

Could you post a screenshot of the ActiveX plugin config window so we can see which preview handlers & extensions are listed?

If others with Office 2016 could do the same for comparison, that would also be useful.

I don't think this is a problem related to DOPUS. I have confirmed it on 3 different computers (1 without DOPUS installed). All have Windows 10 build 10547 and Office 2016. Word documents do not preview in Windows File Explorer but other Office file types do preview. I cannot get DOPUS to view Word files. However, as mentioned above, FileCentre worked after installing an option that allows the program to use Oracle viewers.

MS spend hours installing and re-installing Office 2016. The level 3 tech in the Office support area was very good but could not find the answer. She consulted with the OneDrive Team after replicating the problem after moving a word document to onedrive. Unfortunately they were unwilling to take it further. At the point when she wanted to clean install windows 10 I bailed out as I did not have the time or inclination to go further.

I think it is problem related to the current preview build. I am waiting until later this week when another build will be released.

BTW on the last tech call-back she said that problem was showing up on other tech calls and suggested that would mean it would be dealt with.

I actually must concur with the above post. I don't know if it was a belated response, but I can't see the Word files in the Preview Pane of File Manager either, I've now discovered. I spent some time with an Office and the Windows tech., and they could provide no solution either.
