OTF and TTF Font Thumbnails Are Wrong

I am reviewing Vn 9.1.0.6.3044.x86 in comparison to Vn 8 which I've been happy with for some time.

Two+ years ago I noted here a problem with drawing thumbnails on OTF fonts-- they were shown as a generic icon. At that time TTF fonts were properly displayed in the style of the font. There didn't seem to be a fix for the OTF fonts.

Today, two+ years later, thumbnails on ttf and otf aren't working at all correctly. Both thumbnails show the font names in straight text and does not show style or design. This is worse than before! The text which is displayed sometimes! picks up characteristics such as italic or bold and in some strange manner every other thumbnail is seems either serif or sans serif style. Furthermore, sometimes (1 in 100) the font style is shown correct!

This is not a particularly typical sample as there are no OTF files shown and there are two right ones.

Is there an fix short of going back to Vn 8 where it's half right?

Not knowing what those fonts are supposed to look like when things are working correctly it's difficult to see the problem.

I did notice a problem in the past with font thumbnails which as fixed in 9.1.0.1:

Maybe that fix broke something else?

Can you help with a way for GPSoftware to reproduce the problem? Does it happen with any standard Windows fonts that they would already have?

Actually, never mind, I've found some fonts on my system that get incorrect thumbs too. I've sent a few to GPSoftware.

Thumbnail view doesn't seem to work in the Windows/Fonts directory.

This problem should show up from any other directory. None of the fonts in that prior picture should appear like Arial or Tehoma or normal text fonts. The two "right ones" illustrate how they should all vary.

This picture shows Arial style fonts which are very similar to one another

There should not be any serifs like the last 4 on the second row. In fact they are all "rounded" styles so the stroke ends should be all rounded, not squared off as shown.

The one with the generic OTF icon and the rectangular popup could be messed, so might be ok as shown.

Yeah, something is definitely wrong after looking at it a bit. I'll look at it some more later on.

Has any progress been made to your knowledge to solve this problem?

Do you think 9.1.0.1 which you referenced might be a better choice? Is it available to download?

Current version of 9 is unacceptable so I've gone back to Vn 8.

Thank you for your help.

I don't know what the status is.

9.1.1.0 didn't change anything in this area (as per the release notes) which isn't surprising since the bug report came on the same day that 9.1.1.0 was released.

Getting a fix for an issue a couple of weeks after reporting it would be lucky with most software companies (and downright miraculous with most large ones, e.g. Microsoft, Mozilla/Firefox, Adobe (I could go on) who I don't think have ever fixed a bug I reported in years). Getting a fix on the very same day... Well, it has happened before with Opus but it's not something anyone should count on or expect.

If you want to know more contact GPSoftware yourself: gpsoft.com.au/Support.html

We're putting out a minor update in a day or two and hopefully will have this fixed by then.

Yesyesyes. That would be terrific. Thank you.

(What's minor for everybody else ... )

I just updated and tested the new release and am HAPPY TO SAY the problem with the thumbnails and fonts appears to be corrected! TTFs and OTFs show in the style they were drawn. Thanks for the fast action/correction.

Now I gotta go get my New License... DPape
